HSC, Circle the City and Homeless ID Project Help Man Get
Memory Care Housing

Esteban is a 65 years old man who has experienced homelessness since 2012. Esteban came to the Campus this year after he was discharged from the hospital; he had been hit by a car. HSC Staff referred him to Circle the City Respite to continue recovering from surgery. He has many health concerns including memory issues which has made his road to getting housed extremely difficult. With the collaboration of Circle the City, Homeless ID Project and HSC Staff, we were able to reconnect him with the Arizona Long Term Care System (ALTCS). Esteban recently moved into a memory care facility and is very happy. Now he would like to find his daughter and son who live in California so they can visit him at home. This was all possible through the power of collaboration!
Increase in Shelter Beds Needed
500 people turned away each month
Over the past five years, the number of indivduals sleeping on the streets of Maricopa County has tripled. About 500 people monthly asking for a shelter bed are turned away because of the artificial cap on the number of beds we are able to provide. The Human Services Campus, St. Vincent de Paul and Andre House seek to modify the existing Special Permit that limits our ability to provide shelter beds. The additional beds will be used in several ways :
  • Andre House, in partnership with other agencies, will develop a low-barrier shelter adjacent to their current property that will be open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and serve people with serious mental illness, personal belongings and pets. This would be a maximum of 100 beds.
  • The Human Services Campus will increase the number of beds in CASS to a maximum of 700 beds.
  • Campus partners will be able to provide temporary weather relief shelter beds in emergency situations of intense heat, rain or cold for up to 200 people.

Twin Flat Bed Sheets Needed for Summer Weather Relief
Summer Weather Relief has begun! Temporary weather relief shelter beds are now available. Thank you to CASS for hiring the staff to open summer weather relief and to St. Vincent de Paul for the use of their dining room. The first night of summer shelter was June 10th, and it will be open nightly through September 30th. We are in need of twin flat bed sheets for the mats placed on the floor of the dining room.
