RSDM Team To Perform Reconstructive Surgery in Sri Lanka

For more than a decade, a team of RSDM oral surgery residents and faculty have helped heal Bangladeshi children and adults with cleft palates and cleft lips. In the fall, they travelled to Sri Lanka to perform the same work. Instead, they found many citizens who were physically scarred by years of civil war and in need of reconstructive maxillofacial surgery.  LEARN MORE

RSDM Doc Focuses National Attention on Dental Coverage for Cancer Patients

If  dental procedures were covered as part of cancer treatment, patients would be far less likely to develop one horrible side effect: a disease that deadens the jawbone, called "osteoradionecrosis.''  RSDM's Dr. Gayathri Subramanian's work on the subject was published last month in the influential journal, Health Affairs, which is known for helping shape public policy.  Last week, the piece was excerpted in The Washington Post. Class of '60 Member Recalls School's Early Days

For RSDM's first students, dental school was a place to learn the now-antiquated art of gold foil restorations and dental implants were decades away from being common practice. "You take some pride in how the profession has evolved," says Dr. Robert Forte, who graduated from the school's first class in 1960. He shared his memories with the Dean's Desk as RSDM celebrated its 60th birthday.  LEARN MORE
Ten-Year Meetup

Alumni who graduated in the last ten years are invited to reunite, celebrate their first decade of dentistry and re-establish links with other grads. A meet-up will be held January 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the Sting Ray Lounge, 1210 Washington Street in Hoboken. This year's fourth-year students are also invited. There's no fee to attend. Beverages and appetizers will be provided by the RSDM Alumni Association, which is hosting the event. To RSVP email laura.teti@ruf.rutgers.edu. Alums from other classes are also welcome.
