Good Morning,

We would like to partner with you to offer a short virtual professional development activity to prepare WV teachers for the upcoming 2024 Solar Eclipse.

On Monday, April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will cross a large swath of North America, making it a wonderful learning opportunity to share with West Virginian students and inspire their love of science. West Virginia Space Grant Consortium is sponsoring the West Virginia State University Center for the Advancement of STEM to act as ambassadors for the 2024 Solar Eclipse

Dr. Gordon Telepun, Solar Eclipse Expert and Enthusiast, who is also a NASA Solar Eclipse Ambassador, has graciously agreed to speak to our teachers, helping them to understand how to prepare and what to expect. He has a great deal of information and activities on the scientific phenomena that occur during the solar eclipse that K-12 teachers can connect science standards such as:

  • Weather-temperature, cloud & wind
  • Projections- camera & shadows
  • Animal Behavior -bird, bees, & crickets
  • Pupil Biology - pupil/retina
  • Light Refraction
  • Solar physics - wind
  • Visibility of daytime & nighttime sky
  • Astronomy
  • Photography/Videography

We would like to partner with you to offer WV teachers a 1-hour virtual professional development activity via Zoom (or Teams), so they can hear Dr. Telepun and learn about standard aligned activities for K-12.

We are also excited to announce that our staff has curated STEM activities and lessons that provide literacy connections for K-12 educators and are preparing newsletters, a website and free grab bags for teachers.

Please contact me at vathani.am@wvstateu.edu so we can determine how best we can serve WV educators with free services and supplies.

Thank you,
