As we move into the dark of winter, the seasonal shift invites us to reflect on and ground ourselves at the hearth of collective care. This year, we have remained steadfast in our commitment to women, girls, and gender nonconforming people across New Mexico. As the days grow shorter and there are moments when uncertainty feels more present, our work and our partnerships remind us that there is still so much light being generated by communities throughout our state.

This month, we are highlighting three bright lights of our work: the Rising Up in New Mexico! event and our latest Gender Justice and Adolescent Girls of Color grant awards. Together, these examples demonstrate how our collective investment supports movement leaders, nurtures collective care, and creates pathways for young people to thrive.

As we settle into the winter months, we invite you to stay the course with us. Your partnership keeps the light glowing across our communities, illuminating the futures we are building together.

As we announce the 9th year of our Gender Justice grants, we are reminded of the critical importance of multi-year funding. It took more than a century of fighting for women to attain suffrage. It wasn’t until the Voting Rights Act of 1965 that women of color truly had access to the ballot through the 19th Amendment. Social change takes time, and we are committed to investing in the long arc. In that vein, we’re proud to continue supporting organizations across New Mexico that are leading transformative work at the intersections of gender, race, healing, and structural change.

Since adopting our gender justice and healing framework in 2017, our Gender Justice funding has supported efforts to address the root causes of gender inequity and other systems of oppression. These grants enable organizations to advocate for better policies and structural change—such as paid family leave, living wages, abortion access, and transgender rights. Simultaneously, funding also supports vital direct service work in under-resourced communities from domestic violence and sexual assault prevention to culturally rooted and trauma informed birth work.

We are committed to resourcing this essential work, and we celebrate the leadership and vision of this year’s grantee partners who are building the conditions for gender justice in our state.

We are excited to share this year’s Adolescent Girls of Color (AGOC) fall cohort. Now in its seventh year, this grantmaking program supports organizations working with and for self-identified girls and gender-expansive youth of color to create spaces to connect, build power, and engage in healing.

Our AGOC grants center young people who hold immense brilliance, resilience, and power, yet continue to bear the greatest weight of historic and present-day injustices. By investing in leadership pathways, culturally grounded youth development, and community-driven solutions, we help to ensure that adolescent girls of color and gender-expansive youth have access to the resources, opportunities, and care they need to thrive. When they are supported, the impacts ripple outward by strengthening families, communities, and systems for generations to come. Our AGOC grantee partners embody a transformative vision of the future and cultivate spaces where young people can lead, imagine, and create lasting change in their communities. We remain steadfast in our commitment to resourcing their wellbeing and leadership, and we are honored to stand alongside them as they lead the way to a more equitable future for New Mexico.

We are still feeling the incredible energy from our Rising Up in New Mexico! gathering last month. Thank you to everyone who joined us in Santa Fe and helped make the evening so meaningful. We were honored to host Chris Grumm, former CEO/President of the Women’s Funding Network and co-founder of the Women Moving Millions Campaign, who shared stories and insights from The Uprising of Women in Philanthropy, the book she co-authored. The conversation between Chris and our President & CEO, Sarah Ghiorse, highlighted the decades of advocacy, organizing and building that went into creating the women’s funding movement, while underscoring the power of intersectional feminist leadership.

The evening reminded us of a powerful truth: when we come together with bold generosity, we can move resources in ways that create real and lasting impact. From recent local policy wins to inspiring national election outcomes, this collective momentum continues to light the way forward.

Be bold with us! Make a generous gift to NewMexicoWomen.Org this year end. When you support NewMexicoWomen.Org, you are investing in the wisdom, power, and creativity of advocates, organizers, healers, and movement-builders who are building safety, agency, and opportunity from the ground up.

Together, we can keep fueling the work that strengthens gender justice and supports women, girls, and gender-expansive New Mexicans across our state.
