Relay for Life • April 30
"Thanks so much for your help with this cause for the last 22 years here at ELCA. Last year we were in the TOP FIVE fundraising teams among all teams in Henry County. Thanks for all your donations and luminary purchases. We have raised over $80, 000 through the years to keep our future generations from fighting this terrible disease." ~ELCA TEAM CAPTAIN, Laura Farr

The 2021 Relay will be a drive-thru event at Salem Baptist Church.

Book Character Day was a huge success and a whole lot of fun!

Thank you for supporting the library!

Diversity Council Members
Beautify an Art Wall in Atlanta
In late February, members of the Diversity Council Board and Parent Diversity Council volunteered in Castleberry Hill, an industrial area located southwest of Downtown Atlanta. Partnering with the Castleberry Hill Neighborhood Association (CHNA), the Diversity Board helped to re-paint their welcome mural sign that has been tagged the past several years with graffiti. Castleberry Hill is a popular filming location and after volunteering, some of the students were on the set for a Marvel movie, seeing a car chasing scene in action!
Lunar New Year Celebration
The Lunar New Year is the biggest holiday for East Asian cultures. It begins with the first new moon of the lunar calendar and ends on the first full moon of the lunar calendar. To celebrate the holiday, SAGE provided bubble tea and egg rolls during lunch. Red envelopes were also passed out to symbolize good wishes and prosperity for the new year.
Be What You Can Be
Pre-K4 student, Alyssa Love memorized and recited the inspirational poem "Hey Black Child" for her church for Black History Month. View her recitation HERE.
Preschool Chapel and Elementary Quizbowl
ELCA Junior, Christina Barrow (left) inspired preschool students to dream big as she talked about Mae Jemison, the first African American woman in space in 1992. Elementary students (bottom) enjoyed the third annual quiz bowl during Black History Month to test their knowledge on important historical facts and African American leaders who have positively influenced our society.
Book Club
In honor of Black History Month, high school students participated in a unique discussion focused on Dr. King's nonviolent movement discussed in "Why We Can't Wait" during the 1963 Birmingham campaign. In a two-part discussion, students reflected that following Dr. King's principles on nonviolence cannot take place without God. Our actions and words must be rooted in something stronger than the racial division we face in this world. Any high school student may participate in the spring 2021 book club. To sign up, please see Ms. Lee, ELCA's Director of Diversity.
Lunch & Learn
Thank you to our panelists for speaking about "What is Life Like at an HBCU?" Our panelists included Mrs. Toi Blash (ELCA Parent who attended Spelman College), Javien Moore (ELCA Alumni Class of 2018) who attends Morehouse College, and Dr. Howard (ELCA Parent who is the Assistant Dean for Online Education and Expanded Programs at Morehouse School of Medicine.

It was a great opportunity for ELCA middle and high school students to hear first-hand experiences of HBCU life and how it fosters a sense of confidence to know who you are and how you will impact the world as a young black leader. "I really enjoyed the HBCU luncheon because if anything, it confirmed my dream of attending an HBCU. I really liked how all of the speakers shared their experiences and tried to help us on making decisions about having a plan for college." - Allison, Class of 2023
SAGE Lunch
SAGE partnered with the Diversity Council to serve jerk chicken wings and plantains. Plantains are a major food staple in West, Central Africa, and the Caribbean Islands. The origins of jer for jerk chicken started in 1655 and it's a combination of Arawak Indians' cooking techniques melded with African spices and seasoning. Thank you to the SAGE staff for preparing food as a gateway to explore our own cultural backgrounds or new ones.
Table tennis or ping-pong is the national sport of China. The Diversity Council hosted a friendly round-robin match for high school students to play against each other during IF time. Congratulations to Kristen Capp, Matthew Johnson, Nico Mathew, and Bryson Fields on earning the title of ping-pong tournament champs!

The ELCA Band program congratulates two students for their remarkable achievements in the 2021 GMEA All-State Band Auditions.

Congratulations to 8th Grade Percussionist Molly Corso who was selected as a member of the 2021 GMEA Middle School All-State Band.

Congratulations to 10th Grade Euphonium Player Jesse Corso who was selected as a member of the 2021 9th and 10th Grade GMEA All-State Band.

These musically talented siblings each worked diligently to prepare for the exceptionally long virtual audition process. Unfortunately, the performance event was not held due to COVID. Our ELCA Band family and ELCA community are extremely proud of these two students!
Parents interested in running for a position on the Fine Arts Patrons board should email their interest to elcafinearts@gmail.com. Nominations will be announced in April and votes due by April 14th. Alexander Brothers Are a Hot Duo in
Back-to-Back Heats
Morgan Alexander
Class of 2015
Griffin Alexander
Class of 2016
A pair of Georgia brothers made history Monday afternoon in the rain-shortened Karl Kustoms Bristol Dirt Nationals.

Morgan Alexander from Locust Grove, Georgia, passed Ohio racer John Brooks entering turn 3 during the seventh of 10 laps in the first heat race for the 602 Crate Late Models at Bristol Motor Speedway.
He became the first driver to win on Bristol’s temporary dirt surface. Not to be outdone, his brother Griffin Alexander held off fellow Georgian Cass Fowler in the second heat.
ELCA's goal is to have 100% family participation in our ELCA Fund each year. It's not too late to participate! This is a year-long campaign that continues through June 30, 2021. Every gift counts and...It's GREAT to be ALL IN!
A Gift that Costs You Nothing

This is a fantastic opportunity to make a remarkable impact on deserving Georgia families and the overall financial health of your school community, all while receiving a 100% Georgia income tax credit for your contribution. It's a WIN-WIN-WIN!

Important information for business owners:
Final IRS regulations provide that a payment made by a pass-through business to a charity (such as an SSO for a designated private school) may qualify for an ordinary and necessary business expense deduction, even where the owners receive a state income tax credit for the payment. See HERE for examples of federal tax benefit, which is $3,500 for a $10,000 contribution under certain circumstances.

Celebrating National Nutrition Month®
March is National Nutrition Month, and we have several resources to help you learn more about nutrition and SAGE’s All Foods Fit philosophy. Our blog post introduces this year’s theme for National Nutrition Month, Personalize Your Plate, and how it connects to All Foods Fit.
