Grounding in Faith with Pastor Laura Hannah

Every person’s journey to Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church is unique, shaped by experiences, relationships, and the quiet nudges of the Spirit. At a recent new member class, we asked people how they found their way here. One person was invited by a friend they met in a grief group, drawn in by the promise of a community that could hold both sorrow and hope. Another first encountered Hennepin at the Reconciling booth at Twin Cities Pride, discovering a church where their full self was embraced. Others came through service- volunteering at the Dignity Center, witnessing faith in action long before stepping into the sanctuary. And some arrived through moments of deep reflection, like the one who found us through Poetry, Prayers, and Practice in the wake of the election and inauguration. We are so excited to welcome some of these folks as new members this Sunday in worship.

Each of these stories is a reminder that there is no single way to find belonging, no one right path to a faith community. The Spirit moves in ways we cannot always predict; through conversations, acts of kindness, public witness, and quiet invitations. And yet, each of these paths leads to the same place: a community where love is lived out, justice is pursued, and faith is nurtured.

Wherever your journey began, and however you arrived, I hope you are in a place where you belong. May you continue to walk this path with curiosity, courage, and grace.

Blessings on the journey.

Pastor Laura

This Week in Hennepin History

Written by Phil Wala

1955 (April 1 – 9) This week we have video of a 1955 University of Life trip to Washington, D. C. and New York City. The video was scanned from a reel of 70-year-old 16mm film found in the church archives. What is remarkable about this film is that one of the participants in that trip was 15-year-old Marilyn Jewett, known to us today as long-time Hennepin church member Marilyn Newstrum. We asked Marilyn to share some memories of that trip: Read more and see the rest of the history.

Dear Hennepin family,

After eight extraordinary years on staff at Hennepin Avenue UMC, I’m writing to share that I will be stepping down from my role as Director of Marketing & Communications on Friday of this week.
