Survey kicks off lead water line

replacement program

The Henrico County Department of Public Utilities has launched the Lead Service Line Replacement Program, an initiative aimed at replacing lead-based water service lines that connect a home’s internal plumbing to the water main.

The county will initially develop a comprehensive inventory of any existing lead service lines. Once the inventory is complete, the county will apply for federal and state grants to cover the entire cost of replacing lead-based water service lines.

As a part of building the inventory, residents are encouraged to take an online survey to identify the material of their home’s water service line. Participants will need access to their water service line, a magnet, coin and a camera.

Preserving the history of Woodland Cemetery

For the past three years, the nonprofit Woodland Restoration Foundation has worked to restore dignity to Woodland Cemetery, one of the area's oldest African American cemeteries and the resting place for about 30,000 community members.

Volunteers have removed acres of overgrown grass and brush to uncover 5,000 headstones. As they're rediscovered, the markers are photographed, cleaned and assigned GPS coordinates, which are then published to ancestry.com to support genealogical research throughout the world. Watch

Nonprofit food bank delivers emergency food to households across Henrico

With the county’s support, the nonprofit Henrico Community Food Bank delivers food to about 300 Henrico households every month. The nonprofit, started in 2021, aims to provide access to nutritious food in an equitable and dignified manner to those in need. To make this possible, Henrico County provided seed money and space for the nonprofit.

Additionally, with a donation of soil, plants and seeds from Walmart Glen Allen, the organization started a community garden to grow vegetables for its clients.
