Henrico Sports & Events Center officially opens

with ribbon cutting

Hundreds of residents and other supporters, including two NBA greats, packed the Henrico Sports & Events Center last week as officials cut the ribbon on the massive facility.

“Welcome to ‘Showtime. All the time!’” said Dennis Bickmeier, executive director of the Henrico Sports & Entertainment Authority.

The 185,000-square-foot venue will host games, tournaments, graduations and other events to enhance the county's sports tourism program and spur redevelopment of the Virginia Center Commons mall property. Details | Watch

Henrico installs roundabout at Darbytown and Turner Roads

Henrico County installed a roundabout to enhance safety at the intersection of Darbytown and Turner roads. For quick construction, the Department of Public Works selected a design that uses flexible, plastic pieces that assemble similar to Lego blocks.

"This is an innovative way that we're looking to do other roundabouts possibly throughout the county," said LaTheasha Hinton, a capital projects manager for Public Works.

Old Sellers Way improvement project completed

Henrico County officials cut the ribbon on a project that provides convenient parking by the cricket pitch and soccer fields near Wilder Middle School while also enhancing an entrance to the Sterling Forest neighborhood.

The Department of Public Works created 80 paved parking spaces along Old Sellers Way, which also received three speed humps to slow traffic into the community.

The parking spaces, which include ADA-accessible spaces, provide a permanent solution to what had been a persistent challenge. Parking along the road’s edge had caused the area to become worn and sometimes muddy. An attempt to address the issue with a gravel surface proved insufficient.

Henrico Holiday Express Tour 2023 highlights

With help from other agencies, the Division of Recreation & Parks launched the Henrico Holiday Express Tour in 2020 to promote community, connection and joy during the COVID-19 pandemic. It's proved widely popular with children and families, many of whom gather along the route to wave as the tour passes.

"It's magical," said Jacquelyn Wetter, an events management specialist with Recreation & Parks. "It's like all of the joy of a hundred Christmas movies and hot chocolate and candy canes all shoved into one." Watch
