Cheswick Park reopens with improved amenities

Cheswick Park, Henrico's first park, has reopened following a renovation that created a new fitness area, improved the playground and upgraded the trails, bathrooms, pedestrian bridges, stormwater infrastructure and other amenities. A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the park, located at 1700 Forest Ave., was held Jan. 31.

"This is one of our heaviest-utilized community parks," said John Zannino, director of Recreation and Parks. "We get a lot of people that walk in from the neighborhood...we don't have a lot of parks in this area, so it does service a lot of residents." Read more | Watch

General-obligation bonds to support capital projects

Henrico County is preparing to issue $121.4 million in general-obligation bonds to support 10 capital projects in 2024.

The funding, approved by county voters in the 2022 bond referendum and authorized by the Board of Supervisors on Jan. 23, would allow the projects to advance in different ways. Some are ready for detailed planning, engineering and design, while others are set for construction and other site work.

The bulk of the funding will support projects of Henrico County Public Schools, specifically the new Environmental Education Center – a “living building” planned at Wilton Farm – as well as replacement schools for Jackson Davis Elementary, Longan Elementary and Quioccasin Middle.

Henrico's Local Emergency Planning Committee: Addressing potential threats from hazardous materials

Henrico County draws on the expertise and perspectives of its emergency response professionals and residents to prepare to manage threats from hazardous materials in the community.

The efforts are coordinated through the county’s Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC), which includes representatives of Police, Fire and other response agencies as well as at least one resident from each of the county’s five magisterial districts.

“We understand, when there’s a problem in the community, the best way to solve it is through a coordinated, whole-of-government response, making sure that we get input from our community,” said Rob Rowley, chief of the Department of Emergency Management & Workplace Safety. Read more | Watch
