Greetings!
Soon after the news of the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade reversal erupted last Friday, I received this text from a dear friend and Wesleyan pastor:
“With the decision that went forth today, I’m going to need a LOT MORE help!”
I knew exactly what she meant. Earlier in the week, I had met with her to discuss her passion to develop a ministry for single moms and help her discern next steps.
My friend and President of the Christian Alliance for Orphans, Jedd Medefind, posed a weighty question in this recent blog post: “Will America generally — and followers of Christ in particular — rise to the challenge and opportunity of children who would have been aborted and now won’t?”
This historic event should embolden each of us, as Christians committed to the sanctity of human life. Though an important component of our conviction, we realize a holistic commitment to life must go beyond the opposition of abortion.
This commitment teaches a sexual ethic that our all-knowing God designed to be protective. It fights for the health and wholeness of entire families. It calls us to a grace-filled struggle alongside women experiencing unplanned or difficult pregnancies. It models quality healthcare, emotional and spiritual care for women and mothers that simultaneously upholds the lives and dignity of their babies, inside and outside of the womb. It protects and speaks up and cares for children who have been neglected and abused. It takes in orphaned and abandoned children and makes them sons and daughters.
This commitment demonstrates the love of a powerful God who teaches us that with Him, situations that seem impossible become possible.
I am heartened by the ways I see Wesleyans and many others responding in this historical moment. There have been generous expressions that signal we are not only opposed to abortion, but for life. For over 122 years, Hephzibah Ministries has served as a beacon of this commitment. In our newest season, Hephzibah62:4 is poised for the long game.
The end of Roe v. Wade is the beginning of new opportunities that call for the WHOLE Church to be actively involved. How is God calling you and your church to new steps of obedience, in upholding the sanctity of human life in this crucial time in our history?
Your partners for life,
Jodi and the Hephzibah62:4 Team
