APVMA cancels chlorthal-dimethyl registration

The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) has cancelled registration and use of all products containing chlorthal-dimethyl, also known as Dacthal or DCPA.

The cancellation takes effect immediately, and no phase-out period applies. Growers and retailers who have the herbicide may continue to hold it until further notice from the APVMA, but must not use it. The use of chlorthal dimethyl as an agricultural chemical product is now illegal.

The decision is in response to an APVMA assessment that chlorthal-dimethyl presents an immediate risk to human health due to direct exposure, particularly to unborn babies, and follows a recent US Environmental Protection Agency emergency order to stop use of the herbicide. More information here.

Modern slavery claims to be examined amid 'substantial evidence' of migrant workers being exploited in NSW

The inquiry was a key recommendation from the NSW Anti-Slavery Commissioner, who identified practices including forced labour, possible sexual servitude and emerging labour trafficking.

An important reminder of the need for all employers to always source labour via official channels and to operate under Australian labour laws.

As the 3G switch off looms, tens of thousands of devices still need updating

Mobile towers around Australia have been upgraded to 4G and 5G technology. (Supplied: Telstra)

Telstra and Optus will switch off their 3G networks on October 28. The move will leave around 60,000 handheld devices unable to make emergency calls because they are incompatible with 4G and 5G. Communications Minister Michelle Rowland is urging people to check to see if their device will work before the switch off deadline.

If you haven’t checked and replaced your 3G devices, you won’t get FOE on your phone after next week. That should prompt you to take action!

RNAi-based biopesticide survey

On behalf of the Australian Research Council Research Hub for Sustainable Crop Protection, Curtin University is undertaking a research project to understand public perceptions and attitudes towards ribonucleic acid interference (RNAi) based biopesticides in Australia

The project aims to gather early insights from a cross-section of growers in the context of food production involving the use of RNAi-based biopesticides, which will help inform future technology development and implementation.

The survey will take approximately 20 minutes. All information will be non-identifiable and confidential.

Want to help make paperless trade a reality?

The Federal Attorney-General’s Department has opened consultation on options for implementing the Model Law on Electronic Transferable Records in Australia (MLETR), developed by the UN Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL).

It contains a set of provisions which, if adopted into domestic law, would confirm that transferable records in the form of electronic data (or ‘electronic transferable records’) have the same legal status as traditional paper versions of those documents.

Individuals and organisations involved in trade are invited to share your views during the consultation period, which closes on 28 October.

Find out more and make a submission here.

New Zealand

Olive oil costs heaps at the moment. Can local producers come to the rescue?

The past couple of years have seen olive oil prices spiking higher than a Mariah Carey top note. Heat waves and drought in the Mediterranean caused global olive oil prices to shoot up to levels not seen since the last peak in 1997. Can New Zealand producers of EVOO come to the rescue, restoring the ability of consumers to take home a bottle at a price that won’t make your eyes water?

International

This week’s hot topic is production and prices, and opinions are wide-ranging:

Filippo Berio exec forecasts production rebound, falling prices

Dusan Kaljevic feels bullish as promising olive harvests get underway across the Mediterranean basin, and prices at origin are anticipated to drop. “We are looking at 3.2, maybe 3.3 million metric tons globally.”

However …

Olive oil harvest in Catalonia falls by 50%

The olive oil harvest in Catalonia is expected to be 50% lower this year than last year and the historical average, according to the Federation of Agricultural Cooperatives (FCAC).

When will the price of olive oil come down?

The price of olive oil has shot up, causing headaches for manufacturers and consumers. So, what does the future hold for this costly commodity, and will the price ever come down?

Ionian Islands Regional Authority warns of increase in olive fruit fly infestation

The Department of Agricultural Economy (Olive Fruit Fly Control Programme) of the Regional Unit of Corfu, has announced that due to the favourable conditions on the island for the development of the olive fruit fly, specifically: a) high relative humidity, b) rainfall, c) temperatures, d) increase in olive fruit fly population, and e) the large number of abandoned olive groves which serve as breeding grounds for the pest, these factors have led, or will lead, to an increase in olive fruit fly infestation.

Those conditions no doubt sound familiar to many Australian growers who have seen olive lace bug infestations this year.

Cretan olive groves devastated by prolonged drought

The relentless drought has left the olive trees in Crete reeling, with destruction assessed at over 80%, according to Myron Chiletzakis. As President of the small cooperatives at EΘEΑΣ, he is leading a comprehensive campaign to submit a funding request to the European Union, aiming to secure financial aid for the beleaguered olive growers.

A taste of tradition: olive oil experiences

Take a trip to the olive groves near Florence for a harvest experience that immerses you in the essence of Tuscany. Make the most of this autumnal activity, becoming an olive grower for a day, discovering all things olive oil in picturesque locations. Destination Florence has curated a pick of the producers a short distance from the city, where the secrets of this centuries-old activity are revealed.

Some pointers for agri-tourism offerings, perhaps … if you’ve got the time and personnel to welcome them during the harvest season, of course.

Olive oil loses appeal in Asian and South American markets

On the other hand, imports to the United States and Canada are growing. Bad in Australia.
