Colonel David R. Hines announces retirement

Colonel David R. Hines has announced his intention to retire from the Office of the Sheriff effective March 31 following more than 41 years of dedicated law enforcement service to the citizens of Hanover County.


As part of this transition, Lieutenant Colonel Gregory Six will be appointed Sheriff to fulfill the remainder of Colonel Hines’ term.

Register to speak during Hunting Hawk Data Center public hearing

On Thursday, Jan. 15, the Hanover County Planning Commission will hold a public hearing on the Hunting Hawk Data Center. Due to the high level of public interest, the rules have been amended to allow up to 90 minutes of public comment for each side.

 

Registration to speak is required. Speaker registration is open until all slots are filled. Spots to speak in opposition have been filled. You may register to join the waitlist.


Register to speak online by selecting the option that matches your residency/property ownership status and position.


Written comments are also accepted and given the same consideration. All comments received are shared with the Planning Commission as part of the public input process.

Luck Stone to conduct balloon test this week

Luck Stone will conduct a balloon test at its proposed site on Verdon Road on Wednesday, Jan. 14, from 8 a.m. to noon.

As the new year gets underway, Hanover County residents have several important property-related deadlines coming up — and now is the time to check your eligibility and take action. Explore the details below to make sure you don’t miss a key date.


Real estate assessment informal review period open


The Hanover County Assessor's Office informal review period runs now through Jan. 23. 

 

Any property owner can contact the Assessor's Office to discuss their proposed assessment or request a review of their property. Visit our "Appeal My Real Estate Assessment" webpage to learn more about requesting an informal appeal. 


Land Use Program may lower tax costs


Hanover County’s Land Use Program may lower tax costs for some residents by assessing their property at “use value” rather than market value.

⁠Applications will be accepted through Feb. 1. 


Personal property taxes due


2025 Hanover County personal property taxes are due Thursday, Feb. 5.


Pay online, review your account or print a copy of your bill through Hanover’s tax portal at taxes.hanovercounty.gov.


Applications open for elderly or disabled real estate tax relief


Hanover County is accepting applications for its real estate tax relief program for elderly or permanently disabled residents.

The application period ends March 3.

County closed for MLK Day

Hanover County government offices, courts and solid waste convenience centers will be closed Monday, Jan. 19, for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. 

Hanover teacher spotlights African Americans’ roles in County history

Bell Creek Middle School teacher Joe Gorman has written "African Americans of Hanover County, Virginia," a years-long project preserving the stories and contributions of African Americans who helped shape Hanover’s history.


A fourth-generation history teacher, Gorman’s book features 371 biographical sketches and brings to light stories that were often left untold. Half of the proceeds will help provide copies to students in Mechanicsville High School’s Black History elective.


The book will be available beginning Tuesday, Jan. 13 through major retailers, and Gorman will host a book tour across Hanover in the coming months. 

Nominations open for 2026 Spirit of Volunteerism Awards

Hanover County is accepting nominations for the 2026 Spirit of Volunteerism Awards, an annual celebration recognizing individuals and groups whose compassion, dedication and service make a significant difference in the community.


We’re excited to introduce brand-new categories designed to celebrate the full range of volunteers in Hanover County — from youth to seniors, and from faith-based groups to local businesses.


Recognize those making a difference in our community. Submit your nominations online here. Nominations will be accepted until Wednesday, Feb. 4.
