Hanover County Animal Control and Shelter reports rabies cases are on the rise across the County.
There are 19 confirmed cases this year, which is almost double the number of cases in 2022.
Rabies can be transmitted through a bite or by getting saliva or brain tissue in a wound or in the eyes or mouth.
Keep in mind these tips from Chickahominy Health District to help prevent rabies:
- Report all exposures to animals (usually bites and scratches) to your doctor and CHD.
- Enjoy wildlife from a distance – do not feed or encourage wild animals to visit your premises.
If you've been bitten, don't panic. Wash the wound thoroughly with soap and lots of water. Report the animal to Animal Control at 804-365-6140.
