Interim Chickahominy District Supervisor sworn in

S. Brent Helmick was sworn in as interim Chickahominy District Supervisor this morning.


He will serve for the remainder of the calendar year following the resignation of Angela Kelly-Wiecek.

 

Helmick is a Senior Security Solutions Architect for Verizon, where he has worked for 28 years. He is also a 24-year veteran of Virginia’s Army National Guard, currently serving as a Chief Warrant Officer.

Public hearing on proposed road improvement to Route 1/Route 30 intersection

There will be a public hearing on the proposed improvements to the Route 1/Route 30 intersection on Thursday, Oct. 26 at 6 p.m. at Doswell Community Center.


The hearing will include a project overview followed by a Q&A session. The meeting will conclude with opportunities to engage one-on-one and in small groups with members of the project team.

Applications open for Hanover County Fuel Assistance Program

Hanover County Social Services is accepting applications for their Fuel Assistance Program through Nov. 10.


This program helps eligible households with the costs of heating their homes. The amount received will not necessarily cover all of the costs, but it will be a supplement.


If you have been accepted as eligible for the program in the past, you may have been automatically registered for this year’s program.

Atlee Library receives "Award of Merit"

Pamunkey Regional Library's Atlee Library received an architecture "Award of Merit" at American Institute of Architects (AIA) Richmond's Design Awards!


This award recognizes outstanding design with emphasis on innovation and social impact.

 

"We really appreciated the opportunity seized to celebrate views to the landscape beyond. We also applaud the invitation extended into the building from the parking lot, hinting toward a sequence of experiences within the library," the judges commented.

Fall burn ban begins

As the seasons change, you may want to start burning your leaves, trees and yard debris. Hanover County Fire-EMS wants to help you do that safely.


The fall burn ban allows open burning between the hours of 4 p.m. and midnight.

Early voting available this Saturday

Early voting will be available this Saturday, Oct. 28 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Voter Registration and Elections Office in the Wickham Building, 7497 County Complex Road.


In-person absentee voting is also available at the Early Voting Center from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.


The Early Voting Center will also be open Saturday, Nov. 4.


Friday, Oct. 27 is the final day you can request an absentee ballot by mail. Your application must be received by the registrar by 5 p.m.

Sheriff's Office to host “Civilian Response to an Active Shooter" event 

Join Hanover County Sheriff's Office for their “Civilian Response to an Active Shooter" event on Oct. 26 at 7 p.m.


In addition, Hanover County Fire-EMS shares how to control traumatic bleeding to save lives in their "Stop the Bleed" presentation.


The event will be held in the Hanover County Administration Building, 7516 County Complex Road.

Application period for Hanover County Land Use Program ends Nov. 1

Enrollment ends Wednesday, Nov. 1 for the Hanover County Land Use Program.


This program enables qualified landowners to have their property assessed at “use value,” which may be lower than market value and reduce taxes owed.
