The news this summer about the cut of all $32 million from the Florida budget rocked the world of arts and cultural organizations across the state.
Here in Broward, the elimination of funding affected more than 50 organizations with requests of $3.3 million. For South Florida -- Broward, Miami Dade and Palm Beach counties- more than 200 organizations are losing more than $12 million in state funding. The economic impact is far reaching and estimated to be in the tens of millions with more than 600 groups statewide affected by this veto. The cuts are affecting several of our Funding Arts Broward (FAB) grantees. In the past two years (for programs in 2024 and 2025), FAB has been able to increase its grant support up to $400,000. However, this does not begin to fill the gaps created by state cuts. What is needed is greater awareness of the important role that the arts play in every community that merits ongoing, designated allocations in the state of Florida's budget. Groups here in Broward are reaching out to supporters to get through this year. Many of you, I'm certain, have received these appeals and are responding as generously as you can.
FAB was created 21 years ago by a group of community volunteers led by Francie Bishop Good as a response to cuts in arts funding. Over the past two decades, FAB has made grants of $5 million to arts groups serving Broward. Now we find ourselves at yet another crossroads on arts funding.
So, what can we do together?
-
Support FAB's “Be the Spark!” campaign so that we can continue to expand our support of arts and arts education. With your support, we have raised $2.2 million. Our goal is $3 million. Help us complete the campaign this year so we can do more. Learn more about "Be the Spark!" here.
-
Join an advocacy effort that is just taking the first steps that FAB hopes will bring public and private sectors together in support of the arts. Add your name to get more information
- Continue your own individual support of groups important to you.

Gojko Damjanic, a dedicated member of Funding Arts Broward, joined our mission two years ago with a passion for supporting and enriching our community through the arts. As an active volunteer on the grants committee, Gojko evaluated education grants with a deep desire to help others in the arts reach their full potential. His presence lit up every room, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew him. We will miss him dearly and extend our love and support to his wife Nadezda Selmic, his family and friends during this difficult time. Gojko's legacy of light and inspiration will forever be remembered within our arts community.
