How the Arts Unlock Our Potential
Darius Daughtry is an educator, playwright and poet who uses the power of the written and spoken word to inspire young lives and build stronger communities in Broward. His TEDx Talk is pure poetry, illustrating the power of the spoken and written word to guide people through life’s difficulties – and advocating for equitable access to arts programming and education. Darius is also the Founder and Executive Artistic Director of the Art Prevails Project, a performing and literary arts organization whose mission is to cultivate community by creating equitable access to arts programming and education. Please enjoy this excerpt taken from Darius's TEDx Talk in Hollywood, Florida on how the arts can unlock hidden potential for students and youth.

FAB is pleased to spotlight a FAB Founding Member, Mary Riedel!
Mary Riedel joined the Board of FAB this spring as a “second tour of duty”, now serving as Program Chair for the 2023-2024 year after serving on the initial Board and the Grants Committee of FAB in the formative years.
In addition to her 20-year membership in FAB, Mary is well known for her community work on both the corporate side, as Community Affairs Manager for the South Florida Sun Sentinel for many years, and then on the nonprofit side, as President & CEO of Women In Distress from 2008 until her retirement in 2021.
Throughout her career, she served in volunteer leadership roles on several community boards. According to Mary, interest in arts and culture always has had a special ability to reach and empower our diverse and dynamic community.
Working with other Board members and supporters, Mary also is Chair of the new FAB Campaign Cabinet for a fundraising and strategic campaign called “be the Spark!". FAB is launching this initiative to secure and grow support for the arts and arts education in new ways. You will be hearing much more about this exciting campaign at FAB’s 20th Anniversary Celebration on October 18th at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.

Why volunteer with FAB?
So many reasons, we can’t possibly list them all, but we’ll try for some - spread joy, give back, offer hope, express yourself, change a life, make someone smile, broaden your horizons, foster well-being, and ensure viability. FAB is now welcoming volunteers for its Grants, Program, Membership, and Communications committees.

FAB GRANTS SCREENING COMMITTEE WANTS YOU
As a FAB member you can be a decision maker. You can have a hands-on experience evaluating requests for funds from local arts organizations. It’s the perfect way to learn about many of the organizations and their programs—some of which you may not have known before. Each year about 60 of our members participate in this process. We do provide training. So in addition to the other benefits of being a FAB member, you can be a key in recommending the distribution of funds to the many worthwhile organizations that apply.
Want to know more? Contact Grants Committee Co-Chairs, Mike Hartstein or Eleanore Levy at fabgrants@gmail.com.
