The Mewsletter In-Between

The Observance of a Holy Lent

February, 2024

Hello, Readers, feline and human! Sr. Maggie, OSB-F, Cloister Contemplative, here welcoming you to a special Benedictine Mewsletter In-Between focused on the holy season of Lent.

Benedict believed that life should be a continuous Lent (RB 49.1). Hiss!

But being compassionate as well as realistic, Benedict follows this proclamation with the fact that few of us have the strength for this (RB 40.2). I mew a loud Amen to that!

He then encourages us to try diligently to keep our “manner of life most pure and to wash away in this holy season the negligences of other times.” (RB 49.2-3)

To help you towards this goal...

Resident Novice William suggests a way towards a "Purrfect Lent."

I offer two prayers we can prayer together as a broad community of Benedictine seekers of God.

Cloister members will be using these practices and invite you to join them by using these practices for a holy Lent.

A Purrfect Lenten Practice from the Feline Cloister

Are you wondering what spiritual practice would be important and helpful to you this Lent?

Resident Novice William suggests a way that we can "wash away in this holy season the negligences of other times.” (RB 49.2-3) At the same time, we can form new habits that can reach beyond Lent.

You are invited to join the entire Feline Cloister as they use this practice to turn from self to Christ and to others.

Daily Prayers for Lent from the Feline Cloister

Sr. Maggie shares two prayers for the season of Lent. Both track well with Resident Novice William's idea – that in this season of Lent we take steps to open to Christ living and working within us.

One prayer is a portion of Psalm 51. The second is a prayer by Cardinal John Henry Newman, 1801-1890.

Sr. Maggie invites you to pray these prayers along with all in the Feline Cloister and the whole Mewsletter community.

Click on the link below to reach the prayers. There you will also

find instructions for printing each prayer.

We truly hope that you will find these practices a path to a holy Lent.

All of us in the Feline Cloister send our blessings to you for a most holy observance of Lent as you look forward to the joy of the Resurrection.

Your friend in prayer,

Sr. Maggie, OSB-F
