A Message from the Director

Hello! We have recovered from Halloween. What a great event. I figure we had over 350 kids and maybe 1000 people total here. I love standing at our sign with a bowl full of candy watching all the costumes come across the bridge. We are already planning for next year. Thanks to all the businesses and guests who helped. We even had guests order candy on Amazon and have it delivered.

We remain very busy for the first three weeks of November. We have around 175 guests this weekend and the weekend before Thanksgiving will top out at an amazing 210 people staying here. We have never had this many people in November. December slows down quite a bit until we start up after Christmas with our friends from Eliot Institute over the New Year holiday.

We have had a good response to our letter asking for help to do some projects around the campus. The solar portion appears to be the most popular. I signed the paperwork last week to put 20 panels on Firs. Work should be completed in February. The Federal rebate will be used for heat pumps to heat our buildings more efficiently. Those heat pumps also have a large rebate, so we are stacking the savings. Please consider sending a gift as you are thinking about end-of-the-year giving.

We did a campus walk with our arborist this week. Unfortunately, there are quite a few dangerous trees on site. We will be working with our tree company in the coming months to remove the serious threats. I hate this part of my job. There are a bunch of alder trees at Salmon Bake Beach that have to go. Big leaf maples like the ones that were in front of the Inn, and the old rope swing tree, have a life span of around 125 years. We figure most of the ones left are over 160 years old. It looks like we will lose the one by Firs and the two big ones around my house. I love those trees, but they are rotten in the middle and have already sent two big limbs into or on my house. I can’t imagine not having them there. We will look at replanting.

We are looking forward to hosting our Craft/Friends of Seabeck weekend December 8-10. They are separate events, but the crafters will be invited to join Friends parties. Crafters will get a table to do whatever craft they choose. The Friends will have programs about Seabeck, Jodie will lead some fun craft projects and Kelly will do a cooking demonstration that includes wine pairings. There is still time to register. Just contact the office.

Have a very Happy Thanksgiving. I know that I, and our entire staff, are thankful for our guests and for getting the privilege to be stewards of this great place.

Thanks,

Chuck

Ways to Donate to Seabeck

WAYS YOU CAN SUPPORT

SEABECK CONFERENCE CENTER

Want to help us lay the foundation for the next decade of Seabeck Conference Center? There are many ways, not all of them involving huge disbursements of cash. Here are some creative ideas you might not have thought about:

Cash Donation Today

Tax-deductible gifts via check, credit card, in person, or online. Please consider

upping your regular gift by another 10 percent.

Automatic Monthly Payments

Gifts can be deducted periodically from your bank account, making larger donations easier by spreading them over time.

Low-Cost Appreciated Stock

Avoid paying the capital gains by giving full-market value to Seabeck Conference Center.

In-Kind Donation

We are always in need of furniture, lighting, rugs, and much more - the market value is tax-deductible.

Multi-Year Pledges

A great way to ensure support will be there when we need it year after year.

Designated Gifts

Donate to a targeted project or capital campaign.

Commemorative Gifts

Donate a bench or rocking chair in honor of someone or something important to you.

A Bequest in Your Will

Your gift can be a specific sum or a percentage of an estate after other bequests. Just add an addendum to your existing will.

Life Insurance and Savings Accounts

Same as retirement plans, except those payments made to Seabeck Conference Center are exempt only from estate taxes.

IRA's and Retirement Plans

Your estate receives a charitable deduction for the full gift amount on estate and income taxes, while we receive full donation value. Non-charitable heirs receive only a part of the value (since inherited assets are subject to estate and income taxes).

Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD)

A QCD is a direct transfer of funds from your IRA custodian, payable to a qualified charity. QCDs can be counted toward satisfying your required minimum distributions (RMDs) for the year, as long as certain rules are met. You must be 70-1/2 or older to be eligible to make a QCD.

All gifts are welcome. Seabeck Conference Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and your contribution may be tax-deductible. If you have any questions, please contact our Executive Director, Chuck Kraining at

(360) 830-5010 or email him at chuck@seabeck.org.
