A Message from the Director

Happy August!

The summer is more than half over here at Seabeck. I saw the first Macy’s back-to-school ad last week. I hate to admit it, but that is something that makes me smile. I think our staff would disagree.

We have had a great summer so far. Groups seem happy. Most are back to full attendance. Our young staff seems to be doing a good job in the Dining Room. Overall, a good summer. There have been a few cases of COVID here and there, but I haven’t heard of anything too serious.

Please mark your calendars for the Friends of Seabeck Weekend on December 13-15. The Crafter weekend will be the same weekend but will start a day earlier, so it runs December 12-15. More details will be available as the dates approach.

Last month I mentioned we may be able to host individuals and families. We are not going to offer that at this time. We recently had a ruling from the State that removed our property tax exemption after enjoying one for over one hundred years. We have not done anything differently, they just determined we should never have been exempt. I offered the possibility of individual stays because I immediately wanted to fix everything and get more income as soon as possible. We discussed it as a staff and Board and decided that taking other groups could endanger other tax exemptions. We also realized that we are successful doing what we do and shouldn’t stray from that. We serve those who serve others.

In 2008 I took the final class to become a Certified Conference Center Professional. Part of that class was a Capstone Project that allowed me to analyze Seabeck and work on improving it. Part of that was a section that talked about what could close Seabeck? I listed: a natural disaster (I was thinking earthquake or nuclear accident at Bangor), loss of tax-exempt status, and septic issues. Here we are in 2024 and we were closed by a natural disaster, COVID, we have lost a tax exemption, and we have major septic issues. I am glad I didn’t fully understand this place and its Staff, Board, and guests. These issues will not close us, they are just a bump in the long road of our history.

We must replace our septic tanks this fall. The bids are coming in much higher than expected. We are working closely with the State Department of Health on a timeline. It looks like it will have to be done this October. I am working with the Board on a short-term Capital Campaign focused on infrastructure. Projects to be included will be the septic system, a permanent fix for the bridge piers, improved access to the Meeting House at the back door, and pickleball courts. Look for more information early this fall.

Well now that I have faced two of my biggest fears, I look forward to putting them behind us and start working on our bright future.

Thank you and stay cool out there,

Chuck

Summer Detour to Seabeck

We wanted to make you aware of an upcoming road improvement project in Central Kitsap. This project is located on NW Newberry Hill Rd between Sesame St NW and Hide A Way Ln NW from June 20, 2024 to Sept 3, 2024.

This road closure will affect all of our summer groups. Here is a map of the area and how to get to Seabeck without using Newberry Hill Road.

Annual Friends of Seabeck Holiday Weekend

December 13-15, 2024

This annual retreat for Friends of Seabeck is always a hit with the people who take a holiday break and spend it with us. There are holiday crafts, movies and, of course, lots of food and snacks to make your holiday brighter.

Look in the upcoming newsletters for more detailed information on this popular retreat and sign up when you see it!

2nd Annual Seabeck Crafter's Weekend

December 12-15, 2024

If October sounds too early to be crafting for Christmas, think again. Whether you plan to make gifts, decorations or both, putting off your holiday DIY until December means your Handmade Holiday plans are more likely to come up short.

So pick your projects, gather your supplies, make a plan, then come out to Seabeck on December 12-15th and finish everything for the holidays. You will have nothing to do but craft, craft, and craft all day. We'll feed you and clean up after you. It will be nothing but crafts!

Details will be in the next few newsletters so watch for the upcoming information.

The Blue Moon Quilt for Gloria

Members of Seabeck Family Camp gave Gloria a beautiful quilt as a thank you for all she has done for Seabeck. The quilt was made at Seabeck by one of the quilting groups.

The Blue Moon Quilt

We are blessed knowing an amazing, talented quilter who visits Seabeck throughout the year for quilting retreats. Her name is Mici Wiggins. Once we decided on a gift of thanks, we knew where to go.

This quilt was completed in about 2016 in the Seabeck Meeting House. It was made as a 'block swap' with some Seabeck friends, and the Applique Society. The pattern is called Blue Moon.

It all began with each participant getting a box and the sashing fabric cut into 1.5" strips. Each participant chose her own theme and/or color scheme. Mici's theme was obviously reproduction fabrics from the 1930's. Each month when they would gather at a friend's home to sew for a few hours, they would pass the box to the next person in line where she would then make the required 8 blocks with her fabric and Mici's sashing fabric and place the blocks in the box. They swapped each month for 10 months. Each box came back to the owner when they gathered at their January retreat in the Meeting House. Mici put her blocks together at their retreat.

May you snuggle with this in your RV and think of us fondly in knowing that your 45 years of service did not go unnoticed and you're are appreciated beyond words. Thank you for all you have done and do!

Heartfelt Thanks,

The Fir-Evers

Ways to Donate to Seabeck

Do you want to help us lay the foundation for the next decade of Seabeck Conference Center? There are many ways, not all of them involving huge disbursements of cash. Here are some creative ideas you

might not have thought about:

Cash Donation Today

Tax-deductible gifts via check, credit card, in person, or online. Please consider

upping your regular gift by another 10 percent.

Automatic Monthly Payments

Gifts can be deducted periodically from your bank account, making larger donations easier by spreading them over time.

Low-Cost Appreciated Stock

Avoid paying the capital gains by giving full-market value to Seabeck Conference Center.

In-Kind Donation

We are always in need of furniture, lighting, rugs, and much more - the market value is tax-deductible.

Multi-Year Pledges

A great way to ensure support will be there when we need it year after year.

Designated Gifts

Donate to a targeted project or capital campaign.

Commemorative Gifts

Donate a bench or rocking chair in honor of someone or something important to you.

A Bequest in Your Will

Your gift can be a specific sum or a percentage of an estate after other bequests. Just add an addendum to your existing will.

Life Insurance and Savings Accounts

Same as retirement plans, except those payments made to Seabeck Conference Center are exempt only from estate taxes.

IRA's and Retirement Plans

Your estate receives a charitable deduction for the full gift amount on estate and income taxes, while we receive full donation value. Non-charitable heirs receive only a part of the value (since inherited assets are subject to estate and income taxes).

Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD)

A QCD is a direct transfer of funds from your IRA custodian, payable to a qualified charity. QCDs can be counted toward satisfying your required minimum distributions (RMDs) for the year, as long as certain rules are met. You must be 70-1/2 or older to be eligible to make a QCD.

All gifts are welcome. Seabeck Conference Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and your contribution may be tax-deductible. If you have any questions, please contact our Executive Director, Chuck Kraining at

(360) 830-5010 or email him at chuck@seabeck.org.
