OCTOBER 2021
A Personal Message from the Director
Time sure flies when you are having fun! I swear I just wrote a newsletter article two weeks ago. Now, I am told, it is time again. What is the old saying? As you get older days get longer but years fly by.

Happy October! Fall is my favorite season. I like the colder days and nights, the fall colors, and all the sports. Buster isn’t thrilled with the rain though. He might be in store for a miserable few months. For the rest of us, fall should be a great time at Seabeck.

Groups are continuing to return. October is much busier than September this year. That is an odd fact. I think it is because family groups are still a little reluctant and quilter groups seem rock solid. The October calendar is dominated by quilter groups. We have people on campus every day in October. We will also host the Annual Community Halloween Party on the campus. It will be all outdoors this year.

Pines is moving along, at times very quickly and other times painfully slow. The parking lot is paved, the elevator is mostly installed, the meeting areas are drywalled and mudded and the floor soundproofing is in. Next week we will see painters, electricians, and cement workers at the site. Right now, it is interior doors that are holding us up. They are the lynchpin for the completion. They need to go in before the rest of the finishing can happen. They are scheduled to arrive on October 7th. That has pushed everything back again. I won’t bother you with a grand opening guess this month. I will say I hope to have guests in the rooms in November. I am checking dates and will announce a Ribbon Cutting Party as soon as it seems feasible. In the meantime, you can still help us finish Pines.

Later this month you will receive a letter from me asking, for the final time, to help with Pines. We have the money to complete the building in place, but some of it is borrowed money. It is at a manageable level, but any gift given now will help decrease the amount ultimately financed. That can only help us in the long run. We are working on some exciting matching opportunities to make your gift go even further. This will be the only time you’ll hear from us this season. We will not do a traditional holiday appeal. We really appreciate all the gifts given by all of our generous donors. Without you, none of this would be possible. THANK YOU!

I can’t wait to open the Pines building. I might be a little biased but it is an incredible structure. I can’t help but smile every time I go in there. It is functional and spacious. It turns out that we are doing just what I had said that I hoped we would do. We are coming out of the pandemic with our staff intact, the grounds maintained, and the best conference building in the Pacific Northwest. The future is very, very bright for Seabeck Conference Center.

Thanks,
Chuck

This photo was taken by a Seabeck resident on September 28th. He wrote "Rare low level color this afternoon in Dabob Bay for a few minutes".
This one, also from the Seabeck resident, was taken on September 24th.
We get the most beautiful sunsets in Seabeck.

October Random Acts of Kindness
Here is your August Random Acts of Kindness Calendar. Make someone smile today!
October 'Unofficial' Holidays!
October 1

With the average person consuming almost 19,000 cookies in a lifetime, it is no surprise why we celebrate National Homemade Cookies Day! Every year on October 1, bakers, homemakers, and cookie enthusiasts alike, preheat ovens to serve up these delicious treats. With a variety of options to choose from, there is no limit to the types of cookies you can create in the comfort of your own home.
October 2

Although it sounds crazy, studies reveal that when we name inanimate objects, like our cars, we assign almost human-like attributes that make us feel more in control. National Name Your Car Day is yet another demonstration of that love thang we Americans have with our rides. So, today, jump in “Birdie” and take off!
October 3

German Unity Day is celebrated on October 3 to commemorate the unification of the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic into a single federal Germany on the same date in 1990. A public holiday, the day is characterized by concerts, communal meals, speeches by politicians, and fireworks.
October 4

A warm buttery bun with sugar, honey, and cinnamon — sweet treats are made of these and who are we to disagree! Now on National Cinnamon Roll Day, held annually on October 4, you can indulge yourself. Everyone loves cinnamon rolls and everyone has their special favorite.
October 5

Every year on October 5, people come together to celebrate National Be Nice Day. It’s a no-brainer that we should be nice each and every day, but unfortunately, in this complicated world, that’s a tough goal to achieve on a daily basis.
October 6

National Noodle Day is on October 6 and we are getting ready to celebrate by doing the best thing possible with noodles… eating them! Can you believe that noodles have been around for over 4,000 years? Noodles are popular all over the world and range in shape from flat, to round, to twisted, to sheets, to tubes, and many more. They can be made from rice, buckwheat, wheat, with or without eggs and even now from zucchini.
October 7

Frappes are a favorite for all ages and all ranges of taste. From Cupcake Creme to Peanut Butter Cup and everything in between, frappes are undoubtedly an American staple in the coffee consuming world. Thus, it only seems fair to dedicate an entire day to this epic drink. October 7 is National Frappe Day, and you better bet there will be millions of people celebrating with you.
October 8

Each year, we set aside October 8 to celebrate everyone’s favorite flavorful Polish dumplings. Pierogis were traditionally considered a peasant food, but they eventually gained popularity and spread throughout all social classes—including nobles in Europe. We can see why—they’re made of unleavened dough, boiled, and then baked and fried with butter. Then, they’re stuffed with the most delicious of fillings: potato and cheese, potato and onion, cabbage, mushrooms and spinach… the list goes on!

October 9

Curious Events Day is October 9 and it’s the day to wonder about everything we’ve ever wondered about. How do they get those clipper ships inside the bottles? Who figured out how to tie shoelaces? What’s the most recent sighting of Bigfoot in North America? Why can’t we find out what happened at Roswell? Be inquisitive. Be persistent. And be careful, don’t forget that adage — curiosity killed the cat.
October 10

With holiday dessert buffets coming up soon, National Cake Decorating Day is the perfect time to practice your technique! Halloween’s just a few short weeks away! Learning to create spooky ghosts, spiderwebs, pumpkins, and broomsticks from icing and fondant could be the perfect warm-up for embellishing cakes, cupcakes, and cookies with intricate snowy Christmas scenes a little later on. And think of all the fun you can have mixing frosting colors — like dyeing Easter eggs, but with lickable spoons.
October 11

Columbus Day is a U.S. holiday celebrated on October 11 commemorating the landing of Christopher Columbus in the Americas in 1492. Over the last few decades however, this celebration has faced serious controversy due to Christopher Columbus’ various horrific acts against Native Americans throughout his life as an explorer. Because of this, many places in California, New York, Minnesota, Colorado, and more have transformed this holiday into Indigenous People’s Day. This day no longer has to be a painful reminder, but a positive symbol of how we’ve progressed and evolved.
October 12

Pork. Cooked. Slowly. Celebrate this classic Texas-style dish on National Pulled Pork Day. And bring along your favorite barbecue sauce! Fun fact: Back in 2016, Sonny’s BBQ set the Guinness World Record for the “Largest Serving of Pulled Pork” — a hefty 2,012 pounds of this dish. Eventually, Sonny’s decided — along with other BBQ industry members — to designate October 12 as National Pulled Pork Day. So no matter what your sauce preferences may be — tomato-based, mustard-based, vinegar-based, etc. — just be sure to slather it on to help celebrate.
October 13

National Stop Bullying Day, which falls on the second Wednesday in October, schoolchildren, their teachers and their parents spend time learning about bullying and recognizing how they can prevent it. It calls on schools and organizations to bring together children, educators, and parents for the sake of preventing bullying situations. Bullying can come in many forms, and victims can feel helpless or unsure of how to stop the situation. While bystander intervention is an effective way to stop bullying in real-time, understanding how it can be prevented can be even more important.
October 14

“Let them eat cake!” This popular french saying holds true especially on October 14, aka National Dessert Day! Calories don’t count today, so make sure to pick up that box of donuts you’ve been thinking about all week. Cash in those kale salad points and reward yourself with the a warm sugary glaze. You’ve earned it! The term “dessert” originates from the French word desservir, which translates to the action “to clear the table.” This is because dessert is served after a main meal’s dishes have been cleared. However, the sweetness of dessert has existed long before there was a proper title for it.
October 15

To honor the world’s favorite grouch, Oscar, from “Sesame Street,” National Grouch Day was created on October 15. This is a day to celebrate all the grouches we know — or to embrace the grouch that lives inside all of us. On this day no one can stop us from complaining, being irritable, or wallowing in misery. Because that is what grouches do! Also, this day teaches us that it’s good to spend time processing our negative emotions. On social media this a fun day with people posting jokes, memes, funny photos, and stories.

October 16

October 16 is National Boss’s Day, a chance to celebrate the people who keep us gainfully employed! “Boss” has been used as slang to describe something cool or excellent, so if you are blessed with a great boss, you could call ‘em a boss boss. Whatever you call them, do a little something for the boss in your life.
October 17

National Pasta day is celebrated every October 17. The folks who created pasta definitely knew what they were doing. Hundreds of years of Italian tradition go into this simple meal. Each October, we devote a special day to this incredible dish. Pasta come in many shapes and sizes but no matter the form, it’s something nearly every American Family has grown up with.
October 18

For those men who are part of the “no beard resistance” in a bearded world; there’s National No Beard Day on October 18. Shaving off your facial hair is a fast way to change your look. Going clean shaven could give you a totally new outlook on life, land you that job or completely change your dating pool!

October 19

National New Friends Day rolls around annually on October 19. This holiday is all about making room for new connections in your life, and celebrating the potential for friendship everywhere you go. Research has found time and time again that strong social support is a key to living your happiest, most fulfilled life. So get out there and add some new friends to your docket!

October 20

International Chefs Day is observed all over the world on October 20 of every year. The day celebrates chefs and spreads awareness about eating healthy. Every year, a theme is decided for International Chefs Day — in 2020, it was ‘Healthy Food for the Future,’ and the same theme is repeated this year, although with a deeper focus on sustainability and ensuring a healthy environment for future generations.
October 21

National Apple Day falls on October 21 and is a day dedicated entirely to celebrating all things apple: apple pie, apple sauce, apple crisp… The list goes on and on. This holiday reminds us to appreciate the apple in its myriad forms. On October 21st, pick out your favorite variety and celebrate with apple lovers across the world.
October 22

National Nut Day is celebrated annually on October 22. It was created by by Liberation Foods Company to encourage the public to choose healthier snack options. This is your day for nutty fun!

October 23

National Boston Cream Pie Day arrives on October 23. If you’ve never heard of Boston cream pie before, it’s a yellow butter cake, filled with custard or cream and topped with chocolate glaze. (Yum!) Now, we know what you’re thinking: Why is it called a pie, when it’s actually a cake?
October 24

On October 24, United Nations Day, we celebrate the anniversary of the UN Charter of 1945. To celebrate today, we have to think about 75 years of history, struggle, and accomplishment. So take a moment today to consider the incredible impact the United Nations has had in every corner of the globe.
October 25

National Greasy Foods Day is the feel good holiday that comes every October 25. It’s state fair season: time to fire up the frying oil, chop the potatoes, and break out the napkins. On October 25, you don’t have to feel guilty about eating greasy foods, because you’re are actually encouraged to!
October 26

National Pumpkin Day falls on October 26. Pumpkins are so much more than just a fun holiday accessory. Not only are they one of the best-known sources of beta-carotene (an antioxidant converted to vitamin A in the body), but pumpkins are loaded with fiber, potassium, and vitamin C. Try some on National Pumpkin Day (and of course have a little fun carving them).
October 27

It’s National Black Cat Day on October 27th! Black cats need a little positive PR as their reputation as an omen of bad luck is well-known (and unearned, frankly). In the lead-up to Halloween, National Black Cat Day provides the chance for feline fans to show off their love for the oft-maligned, but always iconic animal.
October 28

National Chocolate Day, celebrated each October 28, is nothing short of a special tribute to mankind’s greatest culinary invention. (Sorry, pizza.) Chocolate can enhance even the most luxurious dessert items. On the other hand, you can get your fix from a simple candy bar. Hint: Try for chocolate with a “high cacao” percentage and low added sugar.
October 29

National Oatmeal Day comes around annually on October 29, celebrating one of the world’s most versatile, familiar foods. But how many of us know more than that? How many ways are there to prepare it? With all the way to eat and use oatmeal, it’s no wonder we had to dedicate a whole day to it!
October 30

National Candy Corn Day on October 30 is an Autumn treat for everyone. They are commonplace in store windows and at parties. We eat them like popcorn, by the handful, and so it seems only natural that we celebrate them for a day. Would you believe that technically they are a vegetable? Well, they are. Whether you grab some from your kitchen table or eat small packets, candy corn returns every year and it’s not going anywhere. So, grab a handful and join us for National Candy Corn Day.

October 31
Halloween on October 31 is undoubtedly the creepiest, most ghostly holiday of them all. Children dress up as Batman, the Joker, Wonder Woman, or some other favorite character; go to parties or walk their neighborhoods with jack o’ lanterns full of sweets as they go trick-or-treating. Spooky decorations fill windows and porches and screams can be heard in living rooms up and down the country as we collectively binge our favorite horror movies.
