A Message from the Director

I am going to go out on a limb and say spring has sprung. The trees are leafing out, the purple martins have returned, the first rhoddie has started to bloom. We even had our first dress code violation for inappropriate shorts. All a sign of spring at Seabeck.

Early giving starts today for WashingtonGives. This is the event that was Seattle GiveBig. The actual event is May 2-3. We are listed on the webpage if you would like to include us in your giving. The link to our page is: https://www.wagives.org/organization/seabeck-conference-center We raised over $2500 during last month’s Kitsap Great Give. THANK YOU!

Scottish Folk Supergroup Daimh (pronounce DIVE) is coming to Seabeck next week for a concert. They will play in our Meeting House on May 9th starting at 7PM. We are offering lodging and meals for anyone that wants to come to the concert, but not drive home that night. It’s $100 per night with two meals. We have extended the offer to the night of the 10th as well if you want an extended stay here. Here a sample of what you can expect: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bOB-fOZ6SmY

We had a great Board meeting here this weekend. It was so refreshing to get back to things other than just finances. It really felt like things were back to normal. We had 185 people on campus this weekend, so that helped us look pretty healthy to the Board.

One of our discussions was rates. We set our rates 24 months in advance of some groups’ dates. The groups that will join us this November are being charged rates that were set in late 2021. That is an eternity in our fast-paced world. We have a provision in our agreements that says rates are subject to change. We never have used that clause and I am adamant we will not except in cases of extreme emergency. When inflation goes through the roof like this year, we work the other side of the equation instead. We cut costs and increase usage instead of re-raising rates. Jodie and Gloria are doing a great job in these areas. I am putting increased pressure on them to fit more groups in than ever before. As I reported last month, they have done just that. The results of this new business is that we have had to be more strict on things like check in/out times, bed counts that more closely fit the reservation number and small group usage of large spaces. I have heard some grumbling that we might appear to be less gracious and welcoming. I hope that is never the case, but I understand that perception. We want to work with all groups to find a good balance. There have been several occasions this year already where groups that have always been able to stay late had to leave because there was a group coming into their building in two hours. If your group has always come early or plans to stay late, you might want to check with us to see if that is possible. We will work with you to make sure you always feel welcome and appreciated while we maximize the use of the campus.

Have a warm and wonderful May!

Chuck

Daimh (pronounced "dive")

Forging the sound of the New Tradition, Daimh are West Highland Music’s proudest exponents. Daimh, the Gaelic word for Connection, perfectly describes the electrifying musical interplay between the individual band members and portrays the interaction with audiences attending their breath-taking live shows around the world. It also translates as the connection to the deep musical well from which they draw their inspiration.

On the Scottish music scene the name Daimh has come to represent a sound of a time and place a musical integrity that many strive to emulate. Formed over 20 years ago the band have embodied the current wave of resurgence in Gaelic culture; the current line up includes younger musicians that have progressed through the thriving Feisean movement and Gaelic medium education system and joined the 3 remaining founding members to continue the cycle of the tradition. Recent achievements include receiving the MG ALBA Folk Band of the Year Award in 2015 and 2018 and passing the halfway mark on their career ambition of performing on every populated Scottish Island.

Concert starts at 7:00pm in the Meeting House

Ticket price: Donations accepted at the door

Repurposing Old Things!

As everyone knows by now, on January 2, 2022 the two large big leaf maples on either side of my house tried to kill me. As the debris was being removed, eagle eyed Board member Arnie Marcus saw pieces of the tree that she thought should be saved. She took a couple of the burls to a local artist named Stelian. He produced these three beautiful bowls for us. They are so cool. He added bits of different minerals to really make them pop. They will on display somewhere on the campus very soon. Thank you Arnie and Stelian! To see more of his work, go to www.artbystelian.com.

It's nice to see the old wood go somewhere other than the fire circle. Both trees are being evaluated next week in hopes of coming up with a plan to safely keep them. That may not be possible, but we will try.

Do You Want to go to a Summer Camp?

There's Space for You at

Seabeck Christian Family Camp

This is a post from Karissa, a camper who joined this group last summer.

___________________________________________________________________________________

Last year was our first summer camp in Seabeck! Actually, it was my first summer camp ever and I always dreamed of Camp as a kid.

Geno was deployed so when the kids and I were invited to come, my first thought was HECK YES! And then… oh wait. I’m going to need to keep track of all 4 of my kids, all week at camp… ALONE?! And then I mildly panicked.

Alone was the last thing I felt from the moment the kids and I checked into the Seabeck Conference Center. We arrived knowing no one and left with full hearts and friendships that have grown and flourished this year in ways I couldn’t have imagined.

From campfire songs to carnivals, cotton candy and tie-dye — 7am polar bear plunges in the lagoon, karaoke nights, chicken football and the biggest slip-n-slide I’ve ever seen… Seabeck Family Christian camp was a dream.

The kids and I stayed in a cabin built in the 1800s which was amazing. The kids had group activities for a few hours in the mornings and I was free to explore or rest and have a little time to myself (or with my spouse if he’d been there, too). We enjoyed days filled with fun that had been thoughtfully planned for us, including swimming and boating, hikes and walks in the woods, journaling and learning about Jesus, hot coffee on cool summer mornings, dinner in the great hall in the evenings, youth group for my pre-teen at night. Every day was something new and something beautiful.

My kids haven’t stopped talking about camp for the last 8 months and we are so very excited to return again this year.

Wanna join us?!!

Ways to Donate to Seabeck

WAYS YOU CAN SUPPORT

SEABECK CONFERENCE CENTER

Want to help us lay the foundation for the next decade of Seabeck Conference Center? There are many ways, not all of them involving huge disbursements of cash.

Here are some creative ideas you might not have thought about:

Cash Donation Today

Tax-deductible gifts via check, credit card, in person, or online. Please consider

upping your regular gift by another 10 percent.

Automatic Monthly Payments

Gifts can be deducted periodically from your bank account, making larger donations

easier by spreading them over time.

Low-Cost Appreciated Stock

Avoid paying the capital gains by giving full-market value to Seabeck Conference Center.

In-Kind Donation

We are always in need of furniture, lighting, rugs, and much more - the market value is tax-deductible.

Multi-Year Pledges

A great way to ensure support will be there when we need it year after year.

Designated Gifts

Donate to a targeted project or capital campaign.

Commemorative Gifts

Donate a bench or rocking chair in honor of someone or something important to you.

A Bequest in Your Will

Your gift can be a specific sum or a percentage of an estate after other bequests.

Just add an addendum to your existing will.

Life Insurance and Savings Accounts

Same as retirement plans, except those payments made to Seabeck Conference Center

are exempt only from estate taxes.

IRA's and Retirement Plans

Your estate receives a charitable deduction for the full gift amount on estate and income

taxes, while we receive full donation value. Non-charitable heirs receive only a part of

the value (since inherited assets are subject to estate and income taxes).

Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD)

A QCD is a direct transfer of funds from your IRA custodian, payable to a qualified charity. QCDs can be counted toward satisfying your required minimum distributions (RMDs) for the year, as long as certain rules are met. You must be 70 1/2 or older to be eligible to make a QCD.

All gifts are welcome. Seabeck Conference Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and your contribution may be tax-deductible. If you have any questions, please contact our Executive Director, Chuck Kraining at (360) 830-5010 or email him at chuck@seabeck.org.
