A Message from the Director

Gloria and Jodie tell me it’s August and my article is late. I have yet to confirm either of these statements, but they both have been fairly reliable in the past, so I will assume they are correct. They always are. So based on this information, I flipped my calendar and started writing.

This has been a great summer so far. Attendance is back to normal for most groups and the people attending seem very happy. The weather has been close to perfect and the campus is holding up pretty well in spite of the heavier usage.

Speaking of usage…2023 is a very good year. As of June 30th, we have had more guest days than 2019. Thanks to Pines the average daily income figure is up as well. I always say we sell experiences, not rooms, but we have to pay the bills. The new Pines popularity is leading us into a great era for Seabeck.

This summer also marks the retirement of two of the best registrars in Seabeck history. Bev Hesterberg and Susan Duncan are retiring after many years of service. Bev has been the registrar for Eliot Institute and runs four groups a year at Seabeck. She deals with strange requests and many, many alternate diet requests with ease and grace. Susan has done the same for Seabeck Family Camp and had to navigate the new Pines housing with their challenging legacy policy. We will miss working with both but will be excited to see them return many times as “civilians.” Thank you both. Come and spend some time in the rockers, you deserve it.

We are continuing to research solar and the Board has voted to go ahead with adding it to Huckleberry. The company I was working with went out of business recently, so I am talking to other companies. It seems like there are a lot of people trying to make a fast buck in solar right now. I need to be careful. If you have had a positive experience with a solar company that serves Western Washington, please let me know. I still hope to start this fall.

I want to give a big shout out to the Seabeck Staff. They are the reason this place purrs along. The Maintenance Crew has the place looking great and has provided some of the best salmon I have had in recent memory. The Office Crew is being flooded with calls and still manages to help everyone with a smile. The Housekeeping Department is keeping the place clean and has been on time during some difficult change over days. The Foodservice Department is providing good meals and alternate diets while facing the daily challenge of varying service styles and new systems. Kudos to all! I think you must agree because the staff fund is at record levels so far.

Have a great month. When the next newsletter comes out, summer will be over and Labor Day will be here. This has been a great but unbelievably fast-moving summer.

Thanks for everything!

Chuck

Ways to Donate to Seabeck

WAYS YOU CAN SUPPORT

SEABECK CONFERENCE CENTER

Want to help us lay the foundation for the next decade of Seabeck Conference Center? There are many ways, not all of them involving huge disbursements of cash.

Here are some creative ideas you might not have thought about:

Cash Donation Today

Tax-deductible gifts via check, credit card, in person, or online. Please consider

upping your regular gift by another 10 percent.

Automatic Monthly Payments

Gifts can be deducted periodically from your bank account, making larger donations

easier by spreading them over time.

Low-Cost Appreciated Stock

Avoid paying the capital gains by giving full-market value to Seabeck Conference Center.

In-Kind Donation

We are always in need of furniture, lighting, rugs, and much more - the market value is tax-deductible.

Multi-Year Pledges

A great way to ensure support will be there when we need it year after year.

Designated Gifts

Donate to a targeted project or capital campaign.

Commemorative Gifts

Donate a bench or rocking chair in honor of someone or something important to you.

A Bequest in Your Will

Your gift can be a specific sum or a percentage of an estate after other bequests.

Just add an addendum to your existing will.

Life Insurance and Savings Accounts

Same as retirement plans, except those payments made to Seabeck Conference Center

are exempt only from estate taxes.

IRA's and Retirement Plans

Your estate receives a charitable deduction for the full gift amount on estate and income

taxes, while we receive full donation value. Non-charitable heirs receive only a part of

the value (since inherited assets are subject to estate and income taxes).

Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD)

A QCD is a direct transfer of funds from your IRA custodian, payable to a qualified charity. QCDs can be counted toward satisfying your required minimum distributions (RMDs) for the year, as long as certain rules are met. You must be 70 1/2 or older to be eligible to make a QCD.

All gifts are welcome. Seabeck Conference Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and your contribution may be tax-deductible. If you have any questions, please contact our Executive Director, Chuck Kraining at (360) 830-5010 or email him at chuck@seabeck.org.
