A Message from the Director

Happy March!

I will spare you my annual poetic musing about Spring and the return of baseball. Just know that when you get the next newsletter, the baseball season will have started. Also, know that I believe one year from now we will be preparing to hang a banner in T-Mobile Park’s rafters. GO MARINERS!

February seemed like the most normal month yet. Scottish Arts was here with numbers bigger than their pre-pandemic averages. We had a great concert here during their stay that was packed. It was literally standing room only. This week is fairly quiet, but starting on March 8th we are solidly booked for quite a while. The phones are ringing off the hook to get new Pines. I think our plan is proving to be right on the money!

We have all our finances under one roof now thanks to our new partnership with First Citizens Bank. They have been great to work with. We have converted all the short-term loans into stable, long-term notes that we can manage with more ease. That has been a long arduous process that I am very thankful to have behind me.

We have been doing a lot of projects around the campus. The road from Reeser is now lit all the way to the Inn. That ends that dark dangerous path between quilters and dinner. We are planting and painting all over campus. The Lagoon has a new flood gate and Salmon Bake beach has a new entrance gate.

The local D.A.R. Chapter that adopted our cemetery has hit the ground running. They have two work parties set for March and April to prepare for the ground penetrating radar to be able to find graves. You will see huge improvements up there as the year goes on.

We have also opened our campus as a training area for Kitsap County Search Dogs. It is a lot of fun watching them train. They are training these beautiful pups to find or track lost people and to recover bodies if something unfortunate happens. The work they do here may really go on to help the community. Buster doesn’t get to play with these dogs, however, he did get to show Nancy’s guide dog, Winnipeg, around the campus during a break at Winter Eliot.

Have a great month. I can’t wait for Daylight Savings Time and a little more evening light. Summer is just around the corner.

Thanks for everything,

Chuck

Seabeck Cemetery Work by the

Elizabeth Ellington Chapter, D.A.R

(Daughters of the Revolution)

There is a group that is planning on doing restoration of the headstones at the Seabeck Cemetery beginning in late March.

Here is what Candace Ladwig Kolbas posted on Facebook:

We are looking forward to cleaning, restoring, resetting and repairing as many as we can in the cemetery. Most of the members in the Elizabeth Ellington Chapter, DAR, have been trained to do this work for a long time. I was trained by Arlington

Cemetery years ago and again out here by Cemetery Preservationist (certified in Washington) Mick Hersey. We have been a part of working in many cemeteries around the Kitsap and Pierce Co areas. Rest assured, we do it right and we do it the way that will historically preserve the headstones, markers and the cemetery as a whole.

I’m hoping the 24th and 25th of March will see winter over so we can begin the work!!

Buster & Winnipeg at Winter Eliot

You don't see service dogs playing to often but Winnipeg had a good time on her break playing with Buster.

Seabeck Snapshots

Monte caught this yearling walking around Chucks house when he got to work. This little dear was way more friendly than Monte expected. Watch the video.

What a great way to start the day!

Ways to Donate to Seabeck

WAYS YOU CAN SUPPORT

SEABECK CONFERENCE CENTER

Want to help us lay the foundation for the next decade of Seabeck Conference Center? There are many ways, not all of them involving huge disbursements of cash.

Here are some creative ideas you might not have thought about:

Cash Donation Today

Tax-deductible gifts via check, credit card, in person, or online. Please consider

upping your regular gift by another 10 percent.

Automatic Monthly Payments

Gifts can be deducted periodically from your bank account, making larger donations

easier by spreading them over time.

Low-Cost Appreciated Stock

Avoid paying the capital gains by giving full-market value to Seabeck Conference Center.

In-Kind Donation

We are always in need of furniture, lighting, rugs, and much more - the market value is tax-deductible.

Multi-Year Pledges

A great way to ensure support will be there when we need it year after year.

Designated Gifts

Donate to a targeted project or capital campaign.

Commemorative Gifts

Donate a bench or rocking chair in honor of someone or something important to you.

A Bequest in Your Will

Your gift can be a specific sum or a percentage of an estate after other bequests.

Just add an addendum to your existing will.

Life Insurance and Savings Accounts

Same as retirement plans, except those payments made to Seabeck Conference Center

are exempt only from estate taxes.

IRA's and Retirement Plans

Your estate receives a charitable deduction for the full gift amount on estate and income

taxes, while we receive full donation value. Non-charitable heirs receive only a part of

the value (since inherited assets are subject to estate and income taxes).

Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD)

A QCD is a direct transfer of funds from your IRA custodian, payable to a qualified charity. QCDs can be counted toward satisfying your required minimum distributions (RMDs) for the year, as long as certain rules are met. You must be 70 1/2 or older to be eligible to make a QCD.

All gifts are welcome. Seabeck Conference Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and your contribution may be tax-deductible. If you have any questions, please contact our Executive Director, Chuck Kraining at (360) 830-5010 or email him at chuck@seabeck.org.
