A Message from the Director

Happy April!

I would say Happy Spring, but there is snow scheduled for the weekend. There is so much going on around here, I don’t know where to start. It’s Thursday and we have over 130 people on the campus! It’s great to be busy again.

With our schedule filling up, we are turning our attention to helping our current groups gain attendees. The first of these groups are listed below. If you are looking for a way to come to Seabeck and love fun groups, Camp Seabeck is for you! We will feature other groups as the year goes on. Please let us know if you would like to have your group featured.

The Elizabeth Ellington Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution is doing great things at the Seabeck Cemetery. They are a very motivated and hard-working group. We will have opportunities to join them in future work parties. Watch this newsletter and our Facebook site (Friends of Seabeck Conference Center) for more information.

We are hosting another concert on May 9th. The Scottish Folk Super Group DIAMH (pronounced DIVE) will be live in the Meeting House that night starting at 7 pm. They have won Scottish Folk Group of the Year. It should be a great event. We are offering our readers the chance to come and spend the night. We will offer dinner, breakfast, and a room for $100. Just contact us for a reservation.

We have closed the refinancing loan and now have all our debt in one long-term, stable loan. We used First Citizens Bank and got a great low rate. This allows us to concentrate on paying off the loan as quickly as possible while still maintaining and improving the campus every day. Pines has continued to raise demand for our campus. Jodie and Gloria have booked 22 new groups since January!

Our food continues to impress, and Kelly has really started to make the Dining Room her own. I think you will love all the little touches she has added. Monte and his crew have continued to get lots of little projects done all over campus.

While the future is bright, most of those new groups haven’t arrived yet, so we can still use your help. The Kitsap Great Give is April 11th. Early giving starts today! It’s a fun and easy way to support the causes you know and love. The link to our site is: https://www.kitsapgreatgive.org/organization/seabeck-conference-center. Our cash flow will be tight for the next two months, especially after all the costs arising from the refinance, so your support is vital right now. We will also participate in Washington Gives in early May.

Thanks for reading.

Go Mariners and Kraken!

Daimh (pronounced "dive")

Forging the sound of the New Tradition, Daimh are West Highland Music’s proudest exponents. Daimh, the Gaelic word for Connection, perfectly describes the electrifying musical interplay between the individual band members and portrays the interaction with audiences attending their breath-taking live shows around the world. It also translates as the connection to the deep musical well from which they draw their inspiration.

On the Scottish music scene the name Daimh has come to represent a sound of a time and place a musical integrity that many strive to emulate. Formed over 20 years ago the band have embodied the current wave of resurgence in Gaelic culture; the current line up includes younger musicians that have progressed through the thriving Feisean movement and Gaelic medium education system and joined the 3 remaining founding members to continue the cycle of the tradition. Recent achievements include receiving the MG ALBA Folk Band of the Year Award in 2015 and 2018 and passing the halfway mark on their career ambition of performing on every populated Scottish Island.

Concert starts at 7:00pm in the Meeting House

Ticket price: Donations accepted at the door

Do You Want to go to a Summer Camp?

There's Space for You at

Camp Seabeck

Taking place at the beautiful grounds and facilities of the Seabeck Conference Center during the last week of June, Camp Seabeck offers the opportunity to relax and unwind without the distractions of daily life. Best of all, housing and meals are included so campers can relax and enjoy all that is offered.

For more than 30 years, this 5-day camp has been a highly anticipated week for a fun-loving and diverse community of campers - children, teens, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, blended families, and single parents. Camp Seabeck is a unique opportunity to strengthen family relationships while also making new friends. Additionally, it provides a safe space for children to practice and enjoy independence.

Long-time campers, Ben and Gwen Sherman, recently shared, “Our family has been coming to Camp Seabeck since 1999. Our two adult daughters practically grew up at Camp. They continue to enthusiastically join us there each year because of the many friendships and positive experiences they have had. Plus, we are now thrilled to introduce our new grandson to the experience.”

While the week is bursting with activities, campers set their own pace and schedule. Children and adults alike are introduced to a special community where acceptance and support are universal.

Wendy Crocker, a veteran camper, said, “Camp Seabeck’s magic comes from genuine giving and receiving. Laughter, music, creativity, kindness, reflection, caring, and trying new things are some of what makes Camp Seabeck so special.”

The Camp Seabeck website is loaded with information about the experience and cost (housing and meals included): http://www.campseabeck.org. The website's activity page features two short videos that provide a great overview of the experience.

Camp Seabeck's Board President Tom Wilcox believes, "Once you've experienced Seabeck, there is a good chance you will return year after year. We always welcome new campers and look forward to helping you create wonderful memories and sharing our Seabeck traditions with you.”

Space is limited to 250 and is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Janice Morris is the Housing Coordinator.

This year, Camp Seabeck will take place from

Recipes From the Seabeck Kitchen

We have a lot of new items on our menus. This salad seems to be a

favorite with a lot of requests for the recipe, so here it is!

Quinoa, Beet & Arugula Salad

Ingredients

  • 8 ounces beets, peeled and sliced
  • 1 cup red quinoa
  • 2 cups water
  • 1/2 cup olive oil
  • 1/2 cup red wine vinegar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons white sugar
  • 1 clove garlic, crushed
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 2 green onions, sliced
  • 3 ounces arugula, chopped
  • 5 ounces goat cheese, crumbled

Directions

  1. Place a steamer insert into a saucepan, and fill with water to just below the bottom of the steamer. Cover pan and bring the water to a boil. Add beets, cover pan, and steam until just tender, 7 to 10 minutes. Set aside.
  2. Bring quinoa and 2 cups water a saucepan over high heat. Reduce the heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer until the quinoa is tender and the liquid has been absorbed, about 15 minutes.
  3. While the quinoa is cooking, whisk olive oil, red wine vinegar, sugar, garlic, salt, and black pepper together in a large bowl.
  4. Remove quinoa from heat, then immediately add half of the vinegar dressing while fluffing the quinoa with a fork; reserve remaining dressing. Cover and refrigerate quinoa until cool, at least 1 hour.
  5. Stir green onions, arugula, goat cheese, beets, and remaining dressing into cooled quinoa mixture. Toss lightly before serving.

Ways to Donate to Seabeck

WAYS YOU CAN SUPPORT

SEABECK CONFERENCE CENTER

Want to help us lay the foundation for the next decade of Seabeck Conference Center? There are many ways, not all of them involving huge disbursements of cash.

Here are some creative ideas you might not have thought about:

Cash Donation Today

Tax-deductible gifts via check, credit card, in person, or online. Please consider

upping your regular gift by another 10 percent.

Automatic Monthly Payments

Gifts can be deducted periodically from your bank account, making larger donations

easier by spreading them over time.

Low-Cost Appreciated Stock

Avoid paying the capital gains by giving full-market value to Seabeck Conference Center.

In-Kind Donation

We are always in need of furniture, lighting, rugs, and much more - the market value is tax-deductible.

Multi-Year Pledges

A great way to ensure support will be there when we need it year after year.

Designated Gifts

Donate to a targeted project or capital campaign.

Commemorative Gifts

Donate a bench or rocking chair in honor of someone or something important to you.

A Bequest in Your Will

Your gift can be a specific sum or a percentage of an estate after other bequests.

Just add an addendum to your existing will.

Life Insurance and Savings Accounts

Same as retirement plans, except those payments made to Seabeck Conference Center

are exempt only from estate taxes.

IRA's and Retirement Plans

Your estate receives a charitable deduction for the full gift amount on estate and income

taxes, while we receive full donation value. Non-charitable heirs receive only a part of

the value (since inherited assets are subject to estate and income taxes).

Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD)

A QCD is a direct transfer of funds from your IRA custodian, payable to a qualified charity. QCDs can be counted toward satisfying your required minimum distributions (RMDs) for the year, as long as certain rules are met. You must be 70 1/2 or older to be eligible to make a QCD.

All gifts are welcome. Seabeck Conference Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and your contribution may be tax-deductible. If you have any questions, please contact our Executive Director, Chuck Kraining at (360) 830-5010 or email him at chuck@seabeck.org.
