WRWA Welcomes New Staff Member Jeff Fitton

WRWA is delighted to announce the appointment of Jeff Fitton as our new Development and Finance Administrator. A longtime SouthCoast resident and active member of the Westport community advancing public education and the environment, Jeff brings more than three decades of experience in nonprofit development, fundraising, and financial administration.

Jeff has held leadership roles at universities including Brown, Johnson & Wales, and Harvard, including the Center for Green Buildings and Cities, where he developed a proven track record in leading fundraising campaigns, managing operations, developing impactful events, and fostering strong community partnerships. In his new role, Jeff will oversee WRWA’s financial operations, support fundraising efforts, and enhance donor relationships while broadening the organization’s outreach initiatives.

“Jeff’s extensive experience, deep local roots, and passion for environmental stewardship make him an invaluable addition to WRWA,” said Deborah Weaver, Executive Director of WRWA. “We are confident that his leadership and collaborative approach will strengthen our mission and further our vision for the Westport River and our watershed.”

“I am honored to join WRWA and contribute to the preservation of the Westport River and surrounding environment,” said Jeff Fitton. “I look forward to working with the team to build on WRWA’s impactful work and create meaningful connections within our community.”

WRWA Installs PurpleAir Sensor to Monitor Local Air Quality

We are excited to announce the installation of a PurpleAir sensor at the River Center. This innovative device will help the Town of Westport and the State of Massachusetts track and understand local air quality, an essential step in safeguarding community health and the environment.

This project was made possible through a grant from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) to the Town of Westport Board of Health. These sensors are used to measure fine particulate matter (PM2.5) levels in outdoor air over a minimum period of one year. Special emphasis is placed on placing sensors in communities with Environmental Justice (EJ) populations to address disproportionate environmental impacts.

What is PM2.5 and Why Does It Matter?

PM2.5 refers to a mixture of solid particles and liquid droplets so small that they can be inhaled deep into the lungs, potentially entering the bloodstream. Exposure to PM2.5 can exacerbate asthma, cause respiratory issues, and contribute to cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases. Monitoring PM2.5 levels is crucial for identifying areas of concern and taking actions to protect public health.

Access Real-Time Air Quality Data

The PurpleAir sensor at the River Center is now live, contributing to a global network of air quality monitoring stations. Members of the community can view current data from the River Center and other local sites, as well as worldwide air quality information, at the following link: PurpleAir Map: Live Air Quality Data

WRWA is proud to support efforts that promote a healthier and more informed community. By providing access to real-time air quality information, we hope to empower residents and stakeholders to take proactive steps toward cleaner air and better public health. Stay tuned for updates and insights from this exciting project! Many thanks to Scott and Callie Greenhalgh from Greenhalgh Electric for helping with the exterior installation at the River Center to get the system online.

We will share more details about these talks as the dates approach. www.westportwatershed.org
