Trump’s Veterans Day greeting speech states in part: “In honor of our great Veterans on Veteran’s Day [sic] we pledge to you that we will root out the Communists, Marxists, Racists, and Radical Left Thugs that live like vermin within the confines of our Country, lie, steal, and cheat on Elections, and will do anything possible, whether legally or illegally, to destroy America, and the American Dream…. Despite the hatred and anger of the Radical Left Lunatics who want to destroy our country, we will MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN.” He made it clear that “the threat from outside forces is far less sinister, dangerous, and grave than the threat from within. Our threat is from within…”

Monday, November 20. Introducing "Daniel's Laws"
Join Representative Donavan McKinney (D-14) and Shawanna Vaughn, the Executive Director of Silent Cry as they introduce The Daniel Jones Juveniles in Incarceration Education Act. This bill aims to ensure that all children in incarceration have access to quality education and training which will prepare them for a successful future.
Jones served 23 years in prison, starting at the age of 16. Upon his release in 2017, he hit the ground running as an advocate and activist for jail and prison reform, voter education, and returning citizens in Washtenaw and Wayne Counties until his death in November 2022. Planet on Fire: Michelle Regalado Deatrick, Washtenaw County's Climate Activist - PEG Exclusive | |
Southeastern Michigan’s Michelle Regalado Deatrick is a climate activist who is fighting the climate crisis both locally and nationally. Born to a Latina mom and telephone lineman, she’s founder and chair of the DNC Council on the Environment and Climate Crisis. Committed to a Democratic party that runs a panoply of diverse “climate candidates” committed to “climate and environmental justice,” she believes climate activism has been shown to be vital to the protection of our planet and a winning platform.
Although prominent on the national level, as a farm owner in southeastern Michigan, Deatrick remains committed to the needs of her home community. As a recent County Commissioner and as an organizer, Deatrick ’s fights hard against expansion of fossil fuel pipelines projects including the Enbridge Line 5 which endangers Michiganders as well as destroys farmland and neighborhoods.

Red State Politicians Are Killing Their Own Constituents
Todd Beeton writes in The Big Picture Substack that the Covid-19 pandemic, starting in 2020, highlighted a significant health divide between residents of Republican-leaning (red) and Democratic-leaning (blue) counties. Generally, more liberal areas were more likely to enforce and adhere to measures such as mask mandates, social distancing, and vaccine requirements. In contrast, conservative areas were less likely to do so. Initially, Covid-related deaths and hospitalizations were concentrated in densely populated blue cities, but this trend eventually reversed. Red areas experienced a disproportionately higher number of hospitalizations and deaths.
The article suggests that this health disparity based on political geography is not new, attributing it to conservative policies that allegedly place constituents at greater risk, and this trend has been evident for decades.
A 2022 study compared mortality rates in Republican and Democratic counties from 2001 to 2019, before Covid. The study revealed that the mortality rate gap between the two groups was initially small. However, by 2019, Democratic counties exhibited a substantially steeper decline in death rates compared to Republican counties.
“An editorial that accompanied the study [in the British Medical Journal] attributes the higher mortality rates in red areas of the U.S. to a relatively recent political trend: Republican governors and legislatures adopted more conservative policies that affected population health, such as opposing Medicaid expansion, minimum wage legislation, and tobacco and gun controls.” Read more

Scientists and Artists are Turning Toxic River Waste into Paint Pigments
“You can still run into children who, you tell them to draw a stream, and they reach for an orange crayon. In Southeast Ohio, acid mine drainage [AMD] is a common pollutant in our streams,” said professor Guy Riefler, Ohio University, in the documentary Toxic Art (2023) presented by the environmental organization Rivers are Life. Many of Ohio’s rivers run orange due to AMD damage, which kills wildlife and destroys habitats.
“With little funding and lots of skeptics, we’ve been refining a process that can continuously treat acid mine drainage, restore a stream for aquatic life, and collect sustainably sourced iron pigment that can be sold, offsetting operational costs,” artist John Sabraw (featured in photo) told Hyperallergic. “Based on our best estimates, we should be able to create jobs and produce a small profit, while eliminating a perpetual pollution source.”
Most of the rest of the so-called True Pigment will likely be sold to industries such as coating, concrete colorants, ceramic, and brick manufacturers. This supports the project and raises awareness through art. – Hyperallergic
