Bike and pedestrian improvements on Fairview Road are almost complete

The Fairview Road Safety and Mobility Improvements Project is nearing completion, marking an exciting milestone for the community.

Over the last few weeks, crews finished up roadway striping and installing bollards to create a bikeway cycle track between Newport Boulevard and Fair Drive.

The upgraded bikeway will better separate motorists from cyclists, providing a safer, more comfortable option for people walking and biking on the corridor.

The project provided new asphalt paving and new bus boarding islands facilitating access to the OC Bus quicker and more convenient for transit riders.

The final remaining work is installation of a pedestrian hybrid beacon near Loyola Road to provide a controlled crossing to access nearby College Park Elementary School. This is anticipated to be installed by May 2026.

Fire team assists victims of four car accident

Recently, Costa Mesa Fire & Rescue responded to a multi causality incident that involved four vehicles — one vehicle overturned, multiple injuries and one patient trapped and requiring extrication.

Seven units responded to the scene: ME81, MA81, MT84, ME85, MR84, MA85, and MB8.

CMFR crews continuously train for and handled it all: Command, triage, treatment, extrication and transport.

A Public Safety Reminder -- Traffic collisions can happen in an instant. Always wear a seatbelt, eliminate distractions behind the wheel and leave space between vehicles — it saves lives.

If you witness a collision, call 911 immediately and keep lanes clear for emergency responders.

Estancia Medical Academy students get a first-hand look at Emergency Medical Services

Costa Mesa Fire & Rescue recently had a visit from the Estancia Medical Academy, a three-year Career Technical Education pathway open to Estancia High School students.

These students are in their second year of the program which focuses on topics related to becoming an Emergency Medical Responder.

EMS Captain Justin Horner led a tour of the station and training grounds as well as engaged in discussion on topics including careers in the fire service and EMS, recognizing life threatening emergencies, and bleeding control.

Fire team learns rapid intervention techniques

Training for high-risk, low-frequency events is a critical component of operational readiness.

During a recent multi-company drill, Costa Mesa Fire & Rescue crews simulated a structure fire in a two-story residential structure that escalated into an Incident Within an Incident following a structural collapse.

This scenario required the activation of a Rapid Intervention Crew, a pre-designated team assigned exclusively to the rescue of downed or trapped firefighters.

The team rapidly deployed, located the simulated victim, and executed a successful rescue, followed by immediate medical assessment and treatment.

This type of training reinforces the importance of situational awareness, resource allocation, and adherence to firefighter survival principles - ensuring crews are prepared to respond effectively when conditions deteriorate unexpectedly.
