Chiefs join fire and police teams in Orange Crush Week of Destructions at the OC Fair
|
On Friday night, Aug. 5, the Chiefs of both the Costa Mesa Fire & Rescue and Costa Mesa Police Departments participated, with other firefighters and police officers throughout the region in the OC Fair & Event Center's Orange Crush Week of Destructions, all benefitting charities.
The Orange Crush Week of Destructions culminated on Friday night, with a PD/FD figure 8 race, followed immediately thereafter and highlighted by the Motorhome Madness RV Demo Derby, now in its 20th year. The event featured Police Chiefs vs. Fire Chiefs and included CMFR’s very own Fire Chief Dan Stefano (aka Ricky Bobby) and CMPD’s Chief Ron Lawrence.
While neither of the chiefs took the top spot this year, it was an impressive introductory appearance for Chief Lawrence and also included Chief Stefano firing up the stadium and walking away with the crowd’s choice trophy for “Best of Show.” Chief Stefano and Chief Lawrence, also known as “Shake & Bake,” plan on coming back strong next year and have said that 2023 will be all Costa Mesa!
The other events included Orange Crush Demolition Derby that featured Police vs. Fire throughout the first week of August, which was highlighted by Fire Captain Joe Noceti participating twice during the week including a strong performance in the car demolition derby and an electrifying third place finish in the Figure 8 Demolition Derby! Great job Captain Noceti!
Costa Mesa Police Officers Gaunt, Gomez, and Garcia competed in the derby, and also in the Figure-8 race, and won!
“Special shout out to our Costa Mesa Police Department ‘RV Madness’ demolition derby crew and the ‘figure-8’ racers, which Costa Mesa won Friday night! It was a great night and a great fundraiser,” Chief Lawrence said.
CMFR and CMPD want to acknowledge the great efforts, partnership and support of all who participated in this week-long event, as well as all of our amazing community partners who played key roles with the same effort to raise funds for these charities.
"The fun and chaos was an outstanding community event to bring people together and ultimately benefit a few different charities this year that are near and dear to the fire families and police teams," said Chief Stefano.
Those charities include The PADRE Foundation, Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) Foundation, California Fire Foundation, Peace Officers Project 999 Foundation and the Susan G. Komen Foundation among a few others, that raised a total of $43,000.

CMTV captures Motorhome Madness at OC Fair

Costa Mesa Fire & Rescue Chief Dan Stefano and Costa Mesa Police Chief Ron Lawrence helped raise funds for local charities last weekend as they battled head to head in the “Motorhome Madness” Demolition Derby at the OC Fair.
A total of six Police and Fire Chiefs from local agencies participated in this year's “Chief’s Challenge” spectacle, which is a friendly but competitive event that challenges drivers to inflict as much damage as possible upon their opponent’s motorhome while striving to have the last vehicle “standing” at the end of the derby, all in the name of a good cause.

Helmets get assembled for the next round of recruits
|
Costa Mesa Fire & Rescue (CMFR) is in the process of gearing up for its newest recruit academy.
There is a lot of preparation that goes into this process. One of the many items to secure in place is the personal protective equipment and safety clothing that the new recruits need for their training. CMFR crews recently prepared the newest recruits helmets.
Each recruit will received two helmets; one “traditional” helmet, which the recruits will wear for structural firefighting and responding to traffic accidents and rescues. The other helmet is a lightweight helmet (with a wide brim) for wild land firefighting.
Each helmet requires assembly, identification decals and the recruit’s name. The assembly of each helmet takes about an hour.
On Saturday, Aug. 6, 2022, Engineer Anthony Vitello led the charge, and the crew had a helmet assembly party at the fire station.

Firefighters take part in Live Fire Training
|
Costa Mesa Fire & Rescue crews have been participating this week in Live Fire Training, in preparation for the department’s upcoming recruit academy.
Crews trained and performed “test burns” while creating a rigorous game plan as they prepare for the upcoming academy.
The ability to perform these trainings is only because of the achievement of the Fire Control 3 – Fixed Facility Certification through the State Fire Marshal’s office, which was earned by Battalion Chief Chris Coates and Captains Mark Geiger and Kevin Reddy.
This rigorous and comprehensive process can take upwards of two years to satisfy the requirements.
The department is excited about the training that will be offered to our upcoming probationary firefighters.

New traffic signal at Baker Street and Randolph Avenue intersection complete
|
The new traffic signal at the intersection of Baker Street and Randolph Avenue has been completely installed and is now operational.
The construction work consisted of installing all equipment to ensure a full working traffic signal system that is connected to the City’s Traffic Management Center (TMC).
The construction also included the installation of new curb ramps and adjoining sidewalks, along with new continental crosswalk markings at each leg of the intersection.
The operating traffic signal will improve overall traffic flow, safely control conflicting movements, and potentially reduce accidents, such as left-turn and right-turn movements.
This new traffic signal will complement the recently finished parking and pedestrian improvements along Randolph Avenue and St. Clair Street.
The Public Works Department strives to improve and enhance the City’s infrastructure and to serve its residents and businesses. The City sincerely appreciates the cooperation of all the community stakeholders in making this project successful.
