CHILDREN WEARING MASKS
Have you heard there is danger in children wearing masks? Where did this information come from? Is it true?
JAMA, the Journal of the American Medical Association, through its Pediatrics division, published a study that suggested that children wearing masks was dangerous. The study was enough to fuel some of the anti-mask, anti-COVID attitudes that continue to linger on in our society and needlessly spread fear among parents.
THE STUDY
The study in question alleged that wearing face masks was dangerous for children because it increased the amount of carbon dioxide they were breathing into their lungs.
Even early on into the pandemic, there were many people who were opposed to mask wearing because they claimed it would deprive the wearer of oxygen and impede lung function.
The authors of the study found what they claimed to be dangerously high and possibly toxic carbon dioxide levels on the inner surface of masks while being worn by 45 children aged 6 to 17.
THE PROBLEM WITH THE STUDY
There were some serious problems with this study. First of all, the device that was used was designed to measure CO2 levels in incubators. This device had a large margin of error when used in an open setting. Concerned researchers who study exposure medicine seriously questioned whether this device was an appropriate one for this type of study.
Secondly, the study did not accurately reflect how much CO2 was actually entering into the children's lungs from the pocket of air inside the face masks. That is because the inhaled air would have been a mixture of that tiny air pocket on their faces and the ambient air around them. This would have led to very low levels of CO2.
THE RETRACTION
The study was retracted fairly quickly but the problem with retractions is that the studies will still be used by people who oppose vaccines, mask use or any of the pandemic measures that have been put in place. These people have the tendency to continue to quote faulty research long after it has been contradicted by newer data.
THE MORAL of the STORY
The moral of the story is that just because a study is published, especially in a respected journal, one should not jump to conclusions or listen to naysayers without following the information through to see if it has been carefully reviewed and/or retracted.
There is so much misinformation from the internet, the media, and from social media, that fact-checking all new information is now an extremely important necessity in order to learn the real truth.

TUFTED RUGS-BUYER BEWARE!!
Tufted rugs are area rugs that are manufactured with a hand-held tufting gun. This method can produce a very nice looking rug which can very closely imitate a handmade oriental rug.
But 'BUYER BEWARE.' These are NOT hand-made rugs! They may be attractively priced and are sometimes actually sold as handmade rugs, but the long term cost can actually be higher.
HOW DO YOU TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
TUFTED RUGS and HANDMADE RUGS?
The difference is in the ways they are constructed.
~~~~~~~
TUFTED RUGS
In a hand-tufted rug (so-called because the tufting gun is controlled by the crafter's hand), a gun shoots the lines of yarn through fabric in loops. The loops are then cut to form the pile.
There is nothing to hold the pile in place. Therefore, to keep the rug from falling apart, latex (glue) is lathered onto the back and then a backing, typically consisting of a netting material followed by a jute or a canvas-like material, is applied on top of the glue.
The backing is there to hide the glue that is holding the rug together.
Tufted Rugs:
- are not durable and do not wear well.
- cannot always be satisfactorily cleaned, especially when animal or human fluids or oils have entered them, because the rug cannot be cleaned through to the backing. (The glue is an integral part of the rug and whatever is in it cannot be washed out.)
- can only be surface cleaned if relatively new.
- may have latex that was not allowed proper time to cure, causing permanent odors to seep into the rug, often from diesel fuel from the shipping fleet. There is no known way to remove that odor.
- have latex that will begin to deteriorate over time, depending on how well the rug is constructed. This can cause the backing to develop ripples and buckling and become ‘lumpy.’ Fine grains of dust will be left on the floor beneath, causing abrasion to the floor and continued damage to the rug.
-
will need to be disposed of much sooner than other rugs. They will eventually help to clog landfills and become a threat to the environment. They are NOT ‘green’ products but they are often sold as environmentally ‘green.'
- have tufts that can be pulled out by hand or by a vacuum.
~~~~~~~
HAND-KNOTTED RUGS
In a hand-knotted rug, each tuft of wool is 'tied' onto the foundation of the rug and is packed down and held down by the arrangement of the wefts that go from left to right over the warps (fringed ends). The knots are very tightly woven and the tufts of the pile cannot be pulled out of the rug.
Hand-Knotted Rugs:
- are made to be durable, hold up to wear and dirt, and can last many decades.
- can have animal or human fluids, as well as many spots and stains, removed during the cleaning or in the case of urine, the decontamination process. (Urine stains are permanent.)
- will only improve its appearance with a thorough cleaning.
- will look very much on the back as they do on the front and will never have a backing applied with glue.
- have tufts that cannot be easily removed by hand or by vacuum.

BETTER HEALTH with CARPETS and RUGS
Better health is everyone's concern. We shop for healthy foods. We take our vitamins. We visit our doctor on a regular basis. We drink filtered water. What we might not appreciate is the value of filtered air for better health.
FILTERED AIR?
How do you effectively filter the air in your home? You can change the filters in your furnace system on a regular, scheduled basis. If you wait too long, you know it, because the filter will be extremely dirty and will make a mess when you change it. So you can vow to do it more often, and maybe you even put it on your wall calendar so you won’t forget. You might even pick up a better quality filter, such as one that uses HEPA standards.
THE BIGGEST FILTER IN YOUR HOME!
But if changing filters can promote a better environment for your home, what about the biggest filter in your home? Wonder what it is? Just look down. If you have carpet, that’s the filter that often gets ignored! If you don’t have much carpet, odds are you have area rugs covering those hard floors. Those area rugs are filters, too.
CARPET & RUGS = HEALTH
Carpet and rugs in a home provide protection for you. They trap all kinds of allergens that can be the bane of asthma sufferers. Carpet and rugs are filters and like all filters, they have to be either changed or cleaned when they are dirty. It’s not practical to change your carpet or rugs on a regular basis but you can — and should — have them cleaned if you are looking for better health for your home environment.
Allergens are very light and float in the air, and are respiratory concerns, especially for allergy and asthma sufferers. Carpet and rugs help to keep those particulates to a minimum. It is important, however, to not let the carpet or rugs get saturated with dirt and bacteria. Once that happens and they can no longer hold onto the dirt and bacteria, those allergens will be dispersed into the air.

PAINT SPILL CLEANUP
Who hasn't needed a paint spill cleanup? So many of us are Do-It-Yourselfers, especially when it comes to painting projects. We bring home our favorite paint chips and maybe even small jars of paint in order to choose the perfect colors. We raid the paint section of our local hardware or big box store for just the right types of paint brushes and buckets. We don clothes we don't care about, move as much as we can out of the way, and cover everything else with tarps before we begin our work.
But disaster can strike no matter how prepared we are! Paint brushes can slip right out of our hands. Buckets full of paint can be accidentally tipped over. If it can happen, it probably will! So an important part of prevention is being prepared just in case a paint spill cleanup becomes necessary.
PAINT SPILL CLEANUP - #1
When it comes to a paint spill cleanup, the most important rule to remember is to start the cleanup while the paint is still wet. Paint that has dried can be almost impossible to remove completely, even by a professional.
PAINT SPILL CLEANUP - FIRST STEP
Scoop up as much of the paint as you can using a smooth object such as a spoon or a piece of cardboard.
And always scoop from the outside to the center (as you would any spill) in order to avoid making the spill bigger.
WHAT TO DO WITH HOUSEHOLD ITEMS THAT HAVE UNWANTED PAINT
TEXTILES:
If the item is a piece of clothing or a cushion cover or curtains or drapes, take it as soon as possible to a dry cleaner. If it is an area rug, take it to a rug cleaning plant ASAP. If the textile can be washed in a washing machine you may want to try that.
UPHOLSTERY:
When cleanup involves upholstery, make sure the fabric is water cleanable. If it is, remove the excess wet paint and mix a solution of 1 part cold water to 1 part dish washing liquid (such as Dawn). Sponge the spill, then rinse until all the paint is gone. As a last resort you may try blotting with acetone (main ingredient in nail polish remover).
If there is any doubt as to the DIY cleaning of your upholstery, call a professional upholstery cleaner to take care of the paint as soon as possible.
