COVID TESTS EXPIRING?

Are your current COVID test kits expiring? On April 10, 2023, COVID-19 as a national emergency was ended, and on May 11, 2023, the federal government ended COVID-19 as a public health emergency.

Unfortunately, COVID is not going away but it is under much better control now. Vaccines, boosters, and better treatment options are available. During the pandemic, the rapid at home COVID test kits were a godsend.

As sometimes occurs after an emergency situation ends, the past several months has led to a blissful ignorance of the COVID problem by many, and it is a pretty good guess that many of us have stashes of COVID test kits in our medicine cabinets.

Unfortunately, cases of COVID are on the rise again and it is not as easy for everyone to get more test kits. But if you still have COVID test kits at home, have they expired? If expired, can they still be used? Are they still effective and for how long?

FDA EXTENSION OF

EXPIRATION DATES

FOR COVID TEST KITS

Each COVID test kit has an expiration date published on the box. But it is possible that the expiration dates on your kits may have been extended as much as two years after the manufacturing date!

The reason behind this action is that so many people do have unused stockpiles of rapid COVID test kits at home. If the expiration dates were not updated, the result would be unnecessary waste.

'EXPIRATION DATE' vs

'BEST BEFORE DATE'

FOUND ON FOOD

The difference between an 'expiration date' and the ‘best before’ date we see on food is easily explained. In the grocery store, anything with a shelf life over 90 days is not required to have date labeling. For those foods with less than a 90-day shelf life, a 'best before' date is required.

However, the 'best before' date only lets the consumer know how long the food will maintain its freshness, taste or nutritional value. Only certain foods require true expiration dates.

EXPIRATION DATES FOUND ON MEDICATIONS

Medications also have expiration dates. The problem here is that medications will degrade over time and lose their effectiveness.

Once a year the Drug Enforcement Agency in the United States has a ‘Take Back Day’ where unused expired medications are collected across the country. (The agency collected 332 tons of expired medications this year (2023)!)

To determine how long it will take for a medication to degrade usually requires accelerated stability testing on new products. When these drugs are subject to extreme temperatures and conditions, the companies can then determine how long they would last under standard conditions.

Although many medications may still be okay to use beyond their expiration dates, there may not be sufficient data to prove their effectiveness after that suggested expiration date.

EXPIRATION DATES ON COVID TEST KITS

With COVID test kits, the concern is not so much one of safety, as it is with medicine product degradation which can lead to a lack of efficacy or potential harm with expired medications.

The real worry is that an expired test will produce inaccurate results such as false negatives. This is because a positive result depends on the COVID antigen on the nasal swab interacting with labeled antibodies in the test kit producing a color change. If the antibodies in the test kit degrade over time, that reaction will not be generated to show a positive test, even if you are sick.

**It is important to note that an extended expiration date should only be applied to unopened bottles and packaging. Exposing products to ambient air and humidity can accelerate the degradation process.

HOW TO FIND OUT IF YOUR COVID TEST KIT EXPIRATION DATE HAS BEEN EXTENDED?

Please continue reading here for links to find out if your COVID test kit expiration date has been extended as well as where to order free kits from the post office and where to find testing sites if you do not wish to self-test.

ORIENTAL & AREA RUG REPAIR

At ABC, our oriental and area rug repair process uses the combined knowledge and experience of our entire staff. Any repairs we suggest will be based on our understanding of the fiber and construction of each individual rug. It is our wish for any repair we do to be as true to the weaver's original design as possible while retaining as much of the rug's value as possible following the repair.

AREA RUG REPAIR

Our oriental rug repair facility is not limited specifically to handmade oriental rugs, but to any number of area rugs, including but not limited to:

  • Navajo Rugs
  • Zapotec Rugs
  • Hooked Rugs
  • Belgian Wool Rugs
  • Dhurries
  • Karastan Rugs
  • Courestan Rugs
  • Custom Rugs
  • Braids

TYPES OF ORIENTAL RUG REPAIR

End Repairs

  • Hand Overcast - The rug is first unraveled to the last undamaged row of pile. An interior hand stitch is then inserted, locking into the foundation to secure the weft line (from left to right) to create an even fringe not foreign to the oriental.

  • Hand Fringe Reinsertion - Warps (from top to bottom) are re-inserted into the foundation to replicate the original fringe.

  • Hand Sew Pre-Woven Fringe - A pre-woven fringe is hand sewn on to the end of the oriental (both ends, if necessary). This will stop any further unraveling and make the rug look presentable. The fringe is removable, allowing the customer to restore the rug in the future, if desired.

Side Work

  • Hand Serging - A hand sewn stitch is applied, which binds the edges (sides) of the oriental, protecting it from unraveling. There are several different stitches and styles depending on the country of origin.

  • Machine Serging - A stitch is sewn, with a machine, which binds the edges (sides) of the carpet, protecting it from unraveling. This is a temporary solution and NOT recommended for hand-made rugs.

  • Cloth Binding - This procedure is generally used for cut area rugs. A cloth binding is machine sewn on to prevent fraying of the rug.

Holes/Tears

  • Patches - A hole can be patched with another oriental rug or area rug with a similar design, but it is not always possible to obtain an exact match. This will protect the rug from any further damage.

  • Hand Re-Weaving - This labor-intensive type of repair is also available, utilizing similar wool, silk, and cotton as originally used.

We also offer a free pick up and delivery service. You can also send us your rugs through the mail or through a delivery service such as Fed Ex or UPS.

At ABC, we offer several options for fringe repair on oriental and area rugs:

Hand Overcast

This option is for rugs that have a fringe but may have lost knots, producing an unraveled, unsightly look. The ends would first be unraveled down to an undamaged row of pile. An interior hand stitch is then inserted.

This stitch locks into the foundation of the rug to secure the final row and to create an even fringe. This will preserve the rug by preventing further damage. Several different decorative end stitches are also available to further enhance the appearance of the rug.

Re-Inserting Fringe

The fringed ends are the warps (end cords of the foundation) of the rug. Warps can be re-inserted by hand into the foundation of the rug to replicate the original fringe.

The final appearance of the rug, as well as its value, will be restored with this method.

Hand Stitching of Pre-Woven Fringe

By far, this is the preferred choice of most clients of ABC seeking fringe repair. A pre-woven fringe will be hand-sewn onto either or both ends of the rug. This will stop any further unraveling and present a beautiful, finished look.

The original fringe, if still present, will not be touched. Thus, the fringe can be removed, allowing the option of having the rug restored by hand at a future time.

Machine Stitching of Pre-Woven Fringe

GIFT A TREE THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

ONE TREE PLANTED.ORG

One Tree Planted.org helps with sustainability and reforestation on our planet by planting trees!

Since the holiday giving season is upon us, this organization has suggested eleven reasons to gift a tree for the holidays. Here is why and how...

ELEVEN REASONS TO

GIFT A TREE PLANTED IN NATURE

FOR THE HOLIDAYS

The season of giving is upon us! And while love and generosity are among the things that make the holidays so special, our daily routines and even holiday traditions come with an environmental cost.

When it comes to gifts, sometimes we're lucky enough to get something we really want and will use for a long time, but how often does that really happen? Most gifts just end up sitting around collecting dust, are returned, or thrown away within a year. While half of returns are re-shelved to be resold, some 5 billion pounds of returned goods end up in landfills, equivalent to the trash produced by 5 million Americans, and the returns process accounts for 1.6 billion gallons of diesel fuel and 15 million metric tons of CO2.

Yikes! That's A LOT of waste in a short amount of time. Luckily, there are ways to break the vicious wasteful cycle. As an eco-friendly alternative or complement to other gifts, you can make a donation to plant trees on behalf of someone you love! through One Tree Planted.org.

Your sustainable gift can come with a custom Tree Certificate or card, and you'll rest easy knowing you've given a waste-free gift that will benefit nature for a lifetime.

Here are eleven reasons to gift a tree planted in nature for the holidays:

1. It is a Unique Gift

For the most part, we can all predict what everyone is getting for Christmas this year. Whether it's the latest gadgets, socks, or new gear. Planting a tree is different and makes us recall fond memories of enjoying the outdoors. Plant trees for your bestie, grandma, the person who has everything, or the nature-lover. They will love the thoughtful gesture.

2. Good for the Environment

There are a ton of ways trees benefit the environment, much more so than the last-minute gift you found on sale that will get little use. And this kind of gift will reduce your carbon footprint since you won't have to have it shipped!

3. Will Last a Lifetime

The gift that keeps on giving! A tree is truly an investment that will return benefits for years to come. Every year your loved one can look back and smile as they think about how their tree is growing and helping all who surround it. And you can follow our many reforestation stories online to learn about the individual impact of different projects.

4. Give Animals a Home

A tree is a gift for our furry, winged, and scaly friends too! 80% of the world's known terrestrial plant and animal species can be found in forests. One tree alone can be home to hundreds of living things! Just think about all the birds, insects, and mammals that will have a place to live thanks to the trees you've helped to plant.

5. Clean the Air

Trees filter the air we breathe, produce oxygen, and remove carbon and harmful particles from the atmosphere. The World Health organization says that 9 out of 10 people breathe air containing high levels of pollutants, but trees can help improve air quality!

6. Benefit Future Generations

Young people today are increasingly concerned about how our changing climate will affect their future. By planting a tree, you are taking positive action for future generations to come. We can reduce the effects of climate change one tree at a time.

7. Help End Hunger

Trees can produce nutritious food for people in need, as well as food that can be sold. They can also restore degraded lands so that farmers can gradually increase crop yields, protect surrounding land to reduce damaging erosion and landslides, and help the ground retain more water so that there is more available for food to grow. With healthier food systems as a result of trees, communities also have improved health, jobs, and economic stability.
