Dahlonega Implements First All-Access Playground
Nestled in Hancock Park, at the corner of Hawkins Street and North Meaders Street, sits the newest addition to the Dahlonega Square, "The Gold Adventure All-Access Playground". On June 1, 2019 The City of Dahlonega opened the playground to the public at the bofficial grand opening of the playground.
Family and friends gathered to enjoy watermelon and snow cones. The children climbing the one of a kind rock wall, swinging to new heights on the Cloud 9 swings, negativing through Charlotte's Web, as well as challenging them to make it across the stepping stones and linkin' log. The children also were able to ride on the backs of sculptures of creatures native to Dahlonega such as the bear cub and leaping trout.
The playground celebrates our natural history with a 6’ mine shaft climbing structure painted to resemble the rocks found in actual Dahlonega-area gold mines. The soft Poured-in-Place rubber matting is colored to resemble a river flowing through a grassy area. The Dahlonega Gold Mine All-Abilities Playground also features three Freenote Outdoor Musical Instruments that are designed to enhance physical and mental development through the exploration of sound. These instruments, like the sculptures and swings in the Playground are accessible to children with physical and developmental handicaps. Only the simplest motor skills are needed to activate pure harmonies and melodies, ensuring musical success for all players!

Veterans Discovered in Mt. Hope Cemetery
|
|
As we prepared for Memorial Day by placing flags on on veteran's graves, and wreaths at the cemetery entrances, we began to wonder how many soldiers graves had gone unmarked over the years.
So, Chris Worick, President of Lumpkin County Historical Group, began doing some digging. Based on the legible headstones in the old section of Mt. Hope, he started writing down the names of men whose birth dates made them old enough to have participated in certain conflicts.
Based on military service records, he discovered at least two War of 1812 veterans, three veterans of the Seminole War in Florida, one from the Mexican War and another from the Spanish American War in 1898.
Initially they will procure the appropriate veterans flag markers for these soldiers graves. The long term goal will be to request marble headstones from the VA to permanently mark and honor these heros from our nation's wars.
