WORRIED ABOUT MEASLES?

Are you worried about measles here in the United States? Before 1963, when a single dose measles vaccine was introduced, measles was not considered a serious disease. Parents even welcomed the disease in their children, as it promised lifetime immunity. In 1960, the mortality rate of measles was 1 in 500,000!

The single dose measles vaccine was responsible for a dramatic drop in measles. Years later, a two-dose vaccine (MMR-measles, mumps, and rubella) and a population wide rollout of the measles vaccine led to the complete elimination of measles in 2000 in the United States. Since the efficacy of the vaccine is over 90 percent, it is essentially impossible for the virus to spread or return in a population where nearly 95 per cent of the people have been vaccinated.

So why are we hearing about outbreaks of measles here in the U.S.? The answer is that unfortunately, measles has not been eradicated globally, and the rest of the world is not doing well with the disease. Outbreaks can be found actively circulating in other countries.

Cases of measles are up around the globe 79 per cent from 2022. Europe has seen a 30-fold increase. In 2022, there were 941 measles cases in Europe. In 2023, there were over 30,000 cases. The world Health Organization reported an 18% increase in cases globally from 2021 to 2022 to 9 million, and a 43% jump in deaths, to 136,000.

When we see measles cases in the U.S., the infections usually happen when travelers abroad bring the virus back with them. Outbreaks can happen when an imported case of measles spreads to areas of unvaccinated individuals.

HOW DOES MEASLES CAUSE HARM?

The measles virus enters through the respiratory tract and then spreads through the bloodstream to other parts of the body. The disease usually starts with a fever, cough, dripping nose, and conjunctivitis and continues with a rash which spreads from the head to the feet. It can lead to an intense inflammatory reaction that can result in severe disease, pneumonia, and death.

Although most people will recover without any long-term issues, those who are pregnant and those who are under 20, especially younger children, are vulnerable. According to the CDC, around 20% of those who get the disease will be hospitalized.

SO WHY ARE WE STILL AT RISK FOR MEASLES OUTBREAKS?

We are still at risk for measles outbreaks here because our vaccine coverage has been slipping. In 2021, 92 per cent of children under two years of age got at least one dose of the measles vaccine but only 79 percent of older children got the required two doses. When vaccination rates go down, measles cases go up.

There are several reasons for the slippage in coverages:

  • One reason is that in some areas such as Florida, which currently is seeing an upswing in cases, parents are being told that it is up to them whether they should send their unvaccinated children to school during an outbreak.

  • Another reason is the disruption to vaccination campaigns that was pandemic-related, as well as anti-vaccine sentiment due to misinformation.

  • Also, it is difficult to convince people of today of the dangers of measles, from pneumonia to brain inflammation, when many young people have never seen a case in their entire lives.

CAN MEASLES BECOME ENDEMIC AGAIN?

Please continue reading here for the answer to that question as well as the best ways to prevent measles and a history of measles in the U.S. from the 1960s to the present.

EXTEND YOUR CARPET LIFE-ESSENTIAL TIPS

Wall-to-wall carpet can represent one of the more expensive investments in your home. Maintaining it properly will make it last longer and keep it looking good. Here are some tips...

YOUR TWO BEST FRIENDS WILL HELP YOU EXTEND YOUR CARPET LIFE!

Did you know the 2 best friends you have to help extend your carpet life are your vacuum and your professional carpet cleaning company? They are the life support system for your carpet.

As part of the plan to extend your carpet life, make sure to maintain and use your vacuum regularly and correctly and schedule a thorough professional cleaning of all areas of your carpet at least every 15 to 18 months. High traffic areas may need more cleanings.

It is a fact that professional carpet cleaning technicians can only work with what you present to them. If your carpet is filled with ground-in dust, dirt, sand, or grit and spills, spots, stains, animal hair, and urine, you are limiting the results a thorough professional carpet cleaning can provide.

Following the information and tips given below will help you to keep your carpet looking and feeling clean and will certainly help to extend its life.

TIP #1-VACUUMS MUST BE MAINTAINED

In order to allow your vacuum to do its job of removing soil, it must be maintained, or your efforts will be wasted.

Your vacuum is not a very complex machine. The dirt collection bags or containers, the belts, and the brush rolls must be periodically checked and replaced and/or cleaned for optimum performance.

The dirt collection bags or containers should never be allowed to go over ½ full. For vacuums with cloth bags, make sure to turn the bag inside out at least every third emptying and sweep it off. This allows the bag to breathe better resulting in greater soil pick up.

Unfortunately, the best maintained vacuum cannot do its job properly without regularly scheduled use. How regular? An easy way to determine this is to vacuum 1 time a week per the number of people (and pets) living in the home. Thus, 2 adults, 2 children, a dog, and a cat would require 6 cleanings a week. If this is impossible due to time restraints, at least the high-trafficked areas should be done once a day. This will make a big difference to the health and appearance of your carpet.

By following this procedure, you will not only be removing the loose soil and grit from the heaviest-soiled areas, but cleaning these areas will effectively stop this soil from spreading throughout the house.

TIP #2-VACUUM CORRECTLY TO EXTEND YOUR CARPET LIFE

Vacuuming correctly is another factor to help extend your carpet life. Always vacuum against the nap to remove as much of the ground-in soil from your carpet as possible.

We recommend the use of an upright vacuum with a beater bar for your carpet. Also remember to adjust the vacuum to match the pile heights of your carpet. And for an even surface appearance after vacuuming, keep the final vacuuming strokes all in the same direction.

INDOOR AIR QUALITY

Indoor air quality is a very important environmental consideration, especially since most of us spend a majority of our time in an indoor environment.

Taking a deep breath of air, especially outdoors after a thunderstorm or when the air is crisp and clean, smells and feels good. It’s refreshing. But taking a deep breath of air inside, such as in a home or commercial building, can be a different matter altogether.

When indoor air quality is poor, there can be issues for many people, especially those who suffer from allergies, asthma, and respiratory illnesses, among others. The list can be quite extensive.

POOR INDOOR AIR QUALITY

Indoor air quality doesn’t mean just 'stuffy' air, the type that can build up in a home that doesn’t have sufficient air exchanges during the day. Although that can contribute to poor health for some individuals, what really causes health concerns is excessive dust, pet dander, pollen, mold, and other pollutants.

More often than not, families of today may have both parents working, meaning less time spent cleaning in the home. Tobacco smoke, radon, cooking odors, and bad air drawn in from outside are all factors that can contribute to poor indoor air quality.

During times of renovating or redecorating, products such as cabinetry, paints, varnishes wood finishes, caulking, adhesives, etc. can also cause poor indoor air quality.

Even everyday cleaning materials, building materials, ducts transmitting heat and air conditioning, as well as our pets and our general furnishings all affect the indoor air quality of our homes and other buildings.

CAN THE INDOOR AIR QUALITY BE CONTROLLED?

Yes. The indoor air quality in a home can be controlled to some degree. Keeping things clean is first and foremost. Second, avoid cleaning products and interior furnishings that emit high volatile organic compounds or VOCs.

These chemical compounds are widely used as ingredients in household products, such as paints, varnishes, and waxes, as well as many cleaning, disinfecting, cosmetic, degreasing, and hobby products.

All of these products can release VOCs while they are being used and, to some degree, when they are stored. Many of them can cause short and long term adverse health effects. Additionally, concentrations of many VOCs can be up to ten times higher indoors than outdoors, making it prudent to have proper ventilation in the home at all times.

WHAT ABOUT VOC EMISSIONS AND ODORS FROM WALL-TO-WALL CARPET?

As far as VOC emissions go, scientific studies have shown new wall-to-wall carpet is one of the lowest emitters of these chemical compounds and they dissipate very quickly. There have been no links of adverse human health effects to the VOC emissions from carpet.

After a carpet installation, the emission levels of VOCS will drop significantly within the first 24 hours and if fresh air is vented into the environment, the level will dissipate to one that is undetectable within 48 to 72 hours. This is true whether the carpet has natural or synthetic fibers.

When there is an odor from carpet, it is usually a harmless byproduct of the latex used to hold the fibers and the backing together. It will dissipate within a few days. This latex is not a natural latex. It is made from compounds different from latex so an allergy to natural latex does not mean you cannot have wall-to-wall carpet in your home.

WHAT ABOUT FORMALDEHYDE IN CARPET MANUFACTURE?

Please continue reading here to find the answer to the above question, as well as the carpet in your home as an air filter, important information from the Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI), and ways to control your indoor air quality and keep your home and carpet environmentally friendly.

TOXIC AIR PURIFYING HOUSEPLANTS

Toxic air purifying houseplants will do an excellent job of absorbing toxins from our indoor environment as long as they are kept out of reach of dogs, cats, and small children.

The list below gives a list of toxicity of each plant, the types of air pollutants they absorb, and a brief description of care. (If you would like a listing of Non-Toxic Air Purifying Houseplants, please click here.

PEACE LILY (SPATHIPHYLLUM)

The Peace Lily is not a true Lily. If ingested by humans or animals, it can cause painful symptoms and sometimes death. It can cause burning and swelling lips, mouth, and tongue, difficulty speaking or swallowing, vomiting, nausea, and diarrhea in humans.

For animals it can cause burning mouth, excessive salivation, diarrhea, dehydration, lack of appetite, and vomiting. If it is left untreated, Peace Lily poisoning could lead to renal failure.

The Peace Lily can remove all three of the most common VOCs — Formaldehyde, Benzene and Trichloroethylene. It can also combat Toluene and Xylene

The Peace Lily should have bright light in the winter and diffused light in the summer. The soil should be moist but not soggy. The plant should be fed every 2 months.

SNAKE PLANT (SANSEVIERIA trifasciata 'laurentii')

The Snake Plant is also known as Mother-in-Law’s Tongue and Hemp Plant. The toxicity level is low in humans but can produce symptoms such as mouth pain, salivation, and some nausea as well as possible dermatological problems (although it is mainly toxic if ingested). It can cause excessive salivation, pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea in cats and dogs.

The Sanseveria is one of the best plants for filtering out Formaldehyde, which is common in cleaning products, toilet paper, tissues, and personal care products.

It is a succulent plant that only needs dim daylight and not much watering. An occasional hour in the sun daily would be good for this plant.

These plants also absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen at night (the opposite of the process most plants follow). This slight oxygen boost may be beneficial to better sleep with these plants in your bedroom.

GOLDEN POTHOS (Scindapsus aures)

Golden Pothos is a poisonous plant and should be kept away from small children and pets. Golden Pothos is considered to be only mildly harmful in small quantities but can produce uncomfortable and sometimes serious side effects in animals and people.

In humans, it can cause burning of the mouth, skin irritation, swelling of lips, tongue, and throat, vomiting, and diarrhea. Cats and dogs can suffer from drooling, choking, swelling of the mouth and tongue, difficulty breathing, and stomach upset. It could even possibly lead to renal failure and/or death.

Variations of the Golden Pothos, such as Devil's Ivy, Taro Vine, and Ivy Arum, are toxic to dogs and cats and can cause oral irritation, intense burning and irritation of the mouth, tongue, and lips, excessive drooling, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing.

The Golden Pothos is a powerful plant for removing impurities from the air, especially Formaldehyde. Since car exhaust is filled with Formaldehyde, it might make sense to use it in a garage.

This plant needs bright, indirect light and not too much water. It is easy to propagate from cuttings.

CHRYSANTHEMUM (Chrysantheium morifolium)

The Chrysanthemum is toxic to dogs, cats, and horses and can cause vomiting, diarrhea, hypersalivation, incoordination, and dermatitis.

NOTE: When choosing a plant for indoors, make sure to choose a floral mum and not a garden variety, which does best when planted outdoors.

The colorful flowers of a mum can do a lot more than brighten a home office or living room. The blooms also help filter out Benzene, which is commonly found in glue, paint, plastics, and detergent.

HEART LEAF PHILODENDRON (Philodendron oxycardium)

This plant is also known as Horsehead Philodendron, Cordatum, Fiddle-Leaf, Panda Plant, Split Leaf Philodendron, Fruit Salad Plant, Red Emerald, Red Princess, and Saddle Leaf.

The Heart Leaf Philodendron is a climbing vine plant and is toxic to dogs and cats when eaten. It can cause oral irritation, intense burning and irritation of the mouth, tongue, and lips, excessive drooling, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing.

This plant is very efficient at removing all kinds of VOCs, and especially good at removing Formaldehyde from sources such as particleboard.

The Heart leaf philodendron is a very low-maintenance plant. It thrives with bright, indirect light and very little maintenance. It needs moist, well-drained soil.
