ORNITHERAPY:
Watching birds: not only fun, but good for you!
Holly Merker
Our first program is scheduled for 7:30 PM on Friday, September 16,2022 at the Upper Dublin Public Library located at 520 Virginia Drive, Fort Washington, PA 19034. This is a free, “in-person” program, and we welcome participation from all interested in the program. You do not need to be a member to attend. The Library is equipped with very up-to-date technology that will allow us to continue to offer program virtually if you are unable to participate in person.
We are pleased that Holly Merker will present her widely acclaimed program on Ornitherapy and have copies of her book available for sale at the program. Holly will explain why getting your daily dose of Ornitherapy is just what the doctor ordered….

FIELD TRIPS
Chimney Swift Watch
7:00 PM, Tuesday, September 6, 2022
Watching Chimney Swifts come in to roost is quite the spectacle! They spend a lot of time swirling around in the air before dropping into their roost site. Bring a chair and binoculars and join us in the parking lot of the Bryn Athyn College, Junge Ice Rink & Pavilion, 3002 Carinwood Drive, Bryn Athyn, PA 19009 to watch swifts descend into a nearby chimney for the night. Because swifts change their roosting spot, it is not guaranteed to see them the night we are watching. You can learn more about Chimney Swifts during our Chimney Swift 101 program on September 9th. This is a joint presentation with Wissahickon Trails, Wyncote Audubon Society, and the Pennypack Ecological Restoration Trust. Free. Learn more at the PERT website: www.pennypacktrust.org

“LIGHTS OUT” AND BIRD SAFE PHILLY
RESUMES FOR THE FALL MIGRATION!
The work and activities of Bird Safe Philly will resume in earnest with the fall migration. The participating buildings in center city buildings go “dark” from midnight to 6:00 AM from August 15th to November 15th. Widespread concern was raised after the October 2020 massive bird kill was reported in the Philadelphia Inquirer. It was determined that the incident was due to a combination of weather conditions and the brightly lit city buildings. The Bird Safe Philly initiative was initiated and the “Lights Out” program resulted.
Volunteers who can volunteer one day a week are welcome and will receive training from one of our lead monitors. Volunteer monitors walk specific routes of several blocks in the city between 5:30 AM and 8:00 AM to determine how many birds and which species were colliding with buildings and glass throughout the spring migration. The monitors record data for each bird collected. Dead birds are taken to the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University where they are kept for research. Injured birds were transported to the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education Wildlife Rehabilitation Clinic.
Support for the Clinic and for supplies for the monitors were realized with funds raised through the Wyncote Audubon Society Birdathon. Additional support will be forthcoming for the fall corps of volunteers. Special thanks are due to everyone who contributed to our Birdathon. A few additional volunteers are needed with injured bird transport to the SCEE Clinic. Learn more about the program and volunteering at www.birdsafephilly.org
