TECH CORNER:

Historic Landmark and Quadcopter

We recently assisted the Town of Sharon with a review of the condition of the unique and historic landmark Sharon Clock Tower located near the town center. The purpose of the review was to identify structural deficiencies and to make recommendations for repairs. This assignment provided us with the opportunity to try out our new camera-equipped quadcopter to access those hard to reach places at the top of the tower.
The clock tower is a significant and historic landmark structure that was designed by New York City architects Lamb & Rich and completed in 1886. The exterior walls are a blend of brown and gray limestone and the red roof covering is roofing tile. The tower rises approximately 45 feet above grade and boasts a nice variety of features including a limestone clock face on each of the four sides of the tower, a fully-functioning mechanical movement that operates each of the clock faces, and a large bell and ringer housed in the open-air belfry above the clock faces. .
We typically perform this type of “walk-around” investigation on the exterior from the ground with the aid of binoculars and on the interior by climbing stairs and ladders and crawling through hatchways. This investigation was a first for TDEG because we used our new camera-equipped quadcopter to view the top of the tower roof, pictured below.
The investigation found the masonry tower to be structurally sound and in fair condition. As expected, portions of the exterior stonework require routine repairs that are considered typical for a structure of this vintage.

We appreciate that the Town of Sharon considered TDEG for this assessment and applaud them for taking the initiative to address the maintenance of this important landmark in a timely manner.

We look forward to the opportunity to “fly again” with our quadcopter on the next assignment.
