Hello Hope Des Moines!
“What’s the deal with Lent? Is it in the Bible? Why should I
Those are just a few of the questions I’ve heard the past few weeks as we’ve moved into the season of Lent as a church.
This past Wednesday we kicked off this 40-day (minus Sundays) season of renewal leading to Easter with Ash Wednesday services. If you didn’t grow up in a traditional church setting, this may all be confusing or just brand new information for you.
Lent is not a Biblical mandate, but rather a really healthy tradition, rooted in the early church’s desire to set aside the weeks leading up to Easter as a holy season
to prepare our hearts to celebrate a risen Savior. Should you
it? If that means placing more religious duties on your to-do list to feel better about your spirituality or impress God—then no.
However, as a follower of Jesus
if you desire to experience more of God, to develop a healthy habit to point you to Jesus and slow down your pace of life to find rest in Jesus
—then absolutely you (and all of us) should, or more appropriately, get to. In that spirit, here are a few ways we encourage you to engage in the season of Lent this year:
- Weekly worship. Nothing fills our souls and centers us on what really matters than worshiping the God who created us with one another in community.
- Investing in Kids!: Similar to Advent, we’re excited that Friendly Jesus is back for Lent! When your kids spot him somewhere around the church at a weekend service – from now until Easter – they can report his location after worship to our reception team at the front desk for a treat… and any child with a perfect attendance Friendly Jesus punch card during Lent will receive a grand prize on Easter Sunday! Why is this such a big deal? With so much competing for the hearts and attention of kids these days, why not point them to what can truly fill them up? Regular worship is absolutely crucial to their faith development, and the best model of that is your leadership in making it a priority! Plus, HopeKids is a blast!
- Community: Maybe you’re giving something up for Lent. That’s great. What about taking something on—like the life-giving power of relationships? This Sunday, we’ll start a five-week opportunity called the Life Group Experience where you can meet others, join a life group, serve, and study the Bible together. Register HERE, or join us any Sunday night from March 10 - April 7.
- Lenten Outreach Project: This Lent, we’re partnering with Habitat for Humanity on a massive all-church local mission effort called Hope Lives Here. We hope to build three new homes and renovate 40 existing homes in the River Bend neighborhood of Des Moines. Learn more HERE, and join us each week of Lent for updates!
Wow, it’s going to be a great few weeks! Don’t miss it!
I can’t wait to see you all this weekend as I’ll preach on Jesus as the “storm crasher” from Mark 4. We’ll see you Saturday or Sunday!
