36% OF IDAHO'S PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLAR CANDIDATES FROM BOISE SCHOOL DISTRICT

More than 50 Idaho high school seniors from throughout Idaho are in the running as candidates for the  U.S. Presidential Scholars Program , according to the national committee that organizes the program on behalf of the White House. With 20 of these students from the Boise School District, that means Boise Schools represent 36% of Idaho’s Presidential Scholar candidates!

Candidates are selected for earning top scores on the SAT and ACT exams and also are evaluated for leadership and involvement in their schools and communities. All have been notified by email and will have until Feb. 26 to submit full applications for the prestigious honor.

Semifinalists will be announced April 17, and two top students – one male and one female – from each state will ultimately be selected on May 7. The Presidential Scholars will travel to Washington, D.C., June 23-25, where they will meet the president and have an opportunity to interact with distinguished scholars from around the country during three days of ceremonies, activities and forums. NAMES & FACES
Taelyn Baiza , 7th grade, North Junior High and TVMSC, will appear on The CW's television program  Did I Mention Invention with Alie Ward  on February 23. Taelyn was filmed while showcasing her Invent Idaho project at the 2018 National Invention Convention and Entrepreneurship Expo (NICEE) last May at The Henry Ford Museum in Michigan. Her project,  The Nautilus , dealt with the problem of microplastic pollution in the oceans and Great Lakes and went on to earn the Jules Verne Award for Forward Thinking Innovation and Global Change. This was the second year in a row that Taelyn was selected to compete at NICEE as an Invent Idaho student representative. Taelyn also earned the Jules Verne Award for Forward Thinking Innovation and Global Change in 2017 for her Invent Idaho project  Mare Sanum (Healthy Sea) Fishing Net .  Taelyn's accomplishment is representative of Boise School District's strong showing in Invent Idaho competitions, which result in many competitors going on to the state or national level yearly.   • February 4-8: National School Counseling Week 2019, "School Counselors: Providing Lessons for Life," will be celebrated from Feb. 4-8, 2019, to focus public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors within U.S. school systems. National School Counseling Week, sponsored by ASCA, highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career. Counselors serve students in each school within the Boise School District supporting the development of students in many ways as they grow into healthy, productive and successful community members.
  • February 6: Garfield Elementary Family STEM Night @ Discovery Center of Idaho, 6 p.m. - 8 p.m.
  • February 8: 3rd Annual Daddy/Daughter Dance, 6:30-8:30 p.m., Timberline High School. This annual fundraiser is presented by Timberline High Baseball and includes dancing, desserts, raffle prizes and more. Click here for more information.
  • February 8: Boise High Band Jazz Night Fundraiser, 7 p.m. - 9 p.m., Basque Center, tickets $20.00 each can be purchased online.
  • February 11:  Boise School Board regular monthly Board meeting, 6 p.m., District Services Center, 8169 W. Victory Rd. Public is welcome to attend. When available, Board meeting agenda will be posted online. 
  • February 18: Presidents' Day - No school for Pre K-12 students.
  • February 19: Capital High School Music Department Benefit Concert Featuring Curtis Stigers, 7:00 p.m. in the Capital Auditorium. Tickets are $15/presale or $20 at the door, with all proceeds benefiting the music department. Tickets can be purchased in advance by contacting Casey Lindorfer at (208) 854-4592.
