MAKERSPACES Are Coming:
Check Out This Preview
Last week, as part of Farragut's Open House, Culver City Unified previewed its vision for Makerspaces for all elementary schools in the district.  Over the next two years, all TK-5 sites will have a dedicated Makerspace --- beginning with El Rincon and Farragut in 2017, and Lin Howe, El Marino, and La Ballona in 2018.  Once it's up and running, all TK-5 students will get one hour of "Maker Time" every two weeks  to learn and experience engineering/design activities in a project-based environment with a highly-trained teacher.
Best Buddies Campaign:
End The "R-Word"
The Best Buddies Club at Culver City High School has joined a national effort to "End The R-Word" completely. The R-word is the word 'retard(ed)', and it is exclusive, offensive, and derogatory. This campaign asks people to pledge to stop saying the R-word as a starting point toward creating more accepting attitudes and communities for all people.
5th Grade Goes To College!
An extension of the Sailing To Success Program started a few years ago at Lin Howe Elementary, every Culver City 5th Grader visited local universities this week, including  Cal State Northridge, Cal State Fullerton, UCLA, Cal State Dominguez Hills, and UC Irvine among others.  The result was an experience that students can build on over the next 7 years as they prepare for success in college and their careers after high school.
She's Headed To Interlochen!
Giuliana Salgado plays bass.  And this Summer, she'll be headed to Interlochen as part of its prestigious Summer '17 Cohort in Northern Michigan.  Here's a fun fact, more than 17% of America's professional orchestra players are Interlochen graduates.  How's that for company?  Congratulations, Giuliana... and to learn more about her trip click HERE.
E=MC2 Math Olympiad:
Culver Schools Represent
  Dr. Jason Frand has been successfully running the E=MC2 Math Tournament for 10 years.  The tournament stands for Excellence In Mathematics Culver City, and now draws dozens of competitors from schools around the region.   Above is Team El Marino, headed by Ms. Mejía, and starred on by Julia Marcus, Camila Huntley, Blake Blechner, Kylar Cheng, and Elijah Gelin.  Check out all that #CULVERPRIDE going on!!!
Learning Language Through Math
CGI problems in math are designed to provide Cognitively Guided Instructional opportunities for students to think, prove, and consider.  Language, of course, is the basis for these instructional moves, and at El Marino, CGI is done in the target language --- either Spanish or Japanese.  The result is that students learn how to do more than just solve a math problem, they learn the language skills to persuade and defend.

Scholarships For Art:
Here Are Our Scholastic Winners
Congratulations to the CCHS Academy Art students featured above as they each received awards from this year's 2016-17 Scholastic Art and Writing Award Competition.  The contest is a national competition for recognizing exceptional artistic and literary talent.  Ms. Hatanaka and the AVPA program make this happen for our students, and we couldn't be more grateful for their recognition and awards as they matriculate to college and beyond!
