Lesson from a Fern
Driving under a canopy of moss-draped live oaks that line the avenue to Boone Hall Plantation, I saw a living illustration of my life as a believer. Lush, vivid green ferns blanketed the trunks and branches of these massive, centuries-old oaks. These verdant ferns were very visible against the contrasting dark, gnarly wood of the oaks.

Our guide told us that the previous day no one would have even noticed the ferns were there. Lack of moisture causes this fern to curl inward into a withered wad of dry, gray-brown scaly material. The plant appears utterly lifeless and will go unnoticed by a passerby. However, within hours of receiving water, it springs to life uncurling its fronds with its vibrant color restored. It is aptly named the “resurrection fern”.

As a believer, I too need Living Water. Time spent in fellowship with God and in His Word revives and refreshes my soul. Without it, I am like that resurrection fern—dried up, withered, unnoticed and unable to impact the world with the love of Christ.  I cannot afford the “dead state” that arises from periods of drought. Spending time daily with Christ in relationship with Him restores and revives my soul. I need and want Christ’s resurrection life!

John 11:25 “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in Me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in Me will never die.”

Isaiah 58:11 “And the Lord will continually guide you, and satisfy your soul in scorched and dry places, and give strength to your bones; and you will be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water whose waters do not fail.”

John 6:35 “Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst.’”

John 7:38 “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’”

Living Water, increase my thirst for You! Let time in Your Word and in fellowship with You be the priority in my life. Let Your rivers of Living Water overflow to those around me. Thank You for satisfying my soul with joy and strength even in scorched and dry places. In Your Name I pray, Jesus.
