STORYTELLER ALUMNI UPDATE

Shawna Hildebrand

Each month, we feature an update on one of our alumni. This month, we got to talk with Shawna Hildebrand, the tribal development division director at Tanana Chiefs Conference. “Find something you enjoy doing and work to excel at it. I picked my degrees based on what I was interested in doing in my life. I am doing what I always wanted to do and that is to serve my communities,” she said. Read more: bit.ly/DFShawnaHildebrand.

GRATITUDE CORNER

Tia Peter

Tia Peter, of Fort Yukon, is studying tribal governance at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and expects to graduate in 2024. “I’m a mother of three and I’m super grateful for the scholarship. I’m excited to further my education for myself and my family. It means so much to be able to have a scholarship from our corporation to have a better future,” she shared. Watch next month’s e-newsletter for another student thank you or send your thank you note to scholarships@doyon.com. •

LANGUAGE

New Mentor-Apprentice Program Kicks Off

This month, we held the first gathering of teams for our new Native language Mentor-Apprentice Program (MAP)! A total of 15 teams came together in Fairbanks on August 12 – 13 to receive training to begin the program, which matches mentors and apprentices who want to learn their Native language. Program materials, including a handbook and sample lessons, are available to all interested language learners. Read more about the program and access MAP resources: doyonfoundation.com/map

STORYTELLER LANGUAGE PROFILE

Meet the MAP Teams

In this Storyteller language profile, we’re excited to introduce you to the teams in our very first Mentor-Apprentice Program (MAP) cohort! A total of 15 mentor-apprentice teams began their one-year, immersion-based language learning journey earlier this month at our first MAP gathering. Meet the MAP teams: bit.ly/DFMAPTeams

NATIVE WORD OF THE MONTH

Our Native language Mentor-Apprentice Program is immersion based, and one of the most important practices is to avoid speaking in English. To help our mentor-apprentice teams be successful, we provided immersion phrases to help them “stay in the language.” In our August Native Word of the Month, we share an example immersion phrase in each of the 10 Native languages of the Doyon region: bit.ly/DFNWOMAug22.

STORYTELLER SUPPORTER PROFILE

Tony Reda, Tectonic Metals

In this Storyteller supporter profile, we speak with Tony Reda, founder, president and CEO of Tectonic Metals. “For me as an individual but also as a CEO and founder of Tectonic Metals, I love supporting local. We've chosen to hang our hat in Alaska so all our projects are situated in Alaska, predominantly on Doyon land. So having our work directly impact the communities that we operate in is extremely important. Doyon Foundation was just a natural fit for a multitude of reasons,” Tony shared.
