MOVIES WITH THE MEADOWS: SPAIN IN THE SIXTIES

EL VERDUGO | (THE EXECUTIONER)

Thursday, November 6, 2025, 7:00 pm

Meadows Museum | 5900 Bishop Blvd | Dallas 75205

In honor of the Meadows Museum’s sixtieth anniversary, Movies with the Meadows presents three films from the decade of its founding, the 1960s. These films, whether drama, comedy, or satire, capture the spirit of the decade in Spain.

El verdugo (The Executioner), 1963 | Directed by Luis García Berlanga

This masterpiece of dark humor is a scathing critique of Franco-era values. An undertaker marries an executioner’s daughter and reluctantly takes over her father’s job so the family can keep their government-allotted apartment. A furiously funny personal attack on capital punishment, "El verdugo" evaded the state censors who sought to suppress it and today is regarded as one of the greatest Spanish films of all time.

Movies with the Meadows is presented in collaboration with DIFF. Screenings are held in the Bob and Jean Smith Auditorium. While not every film in the series has an MPAA rating, all are intended for mature audiences only.

Spanish with English subtitles | Satirical comedy | 90 minutes

$5; free for SMU faculty/staff/students and members at the Individual level and above.
