LYON LINKS
D. Willard Lyon Chapter
Serving So. California and Nevada
May 2020

Greetings!
So we thought we knew what retirement was all about: a monthly retirement check, our grandchildren, our local charities, and all those trips we had planned for years. Then came COVID-19 and we are all suddenly confined to our homes.
It is my hope that you have all found ways of coping, and are well. I have found all those projects I have procrastinated on for years have now become my life. I also find that I value, more than ever, contact with neighbors and friends. ZOOM meetings are the new norm, and since we can’t meet as a chapter right now, we are planning a Zoom Lyons Chapter event this summer (more about that below). Hope you will join us.

One of the opportunities provided through
YMCA Alumni
is the
International Service Corps (ISC).
This is a hands-on immersion into another culture taking your YMCA experience and using it to encourage, teach, and assist our colleagues internationally. Some have taught basketball or swimming, others have assisted with strategic planning and recovery following a natural disaster. Because of the current situation we anticipate the need will be greater than ever. If you think you’d fit somewhere and be interested in serving internationally, I’d be glad to provide more information.
Stay safe… and thanks for being a part of YMCA Alumni.

President

Coming July 27: A Lyon Chapter Virtual Campfire
|
|
|
Things were a bit lonely when we were supposed to be enjoying our annual visit to the
Candlelight Theatre.
Alas, we had to cancel with the stay-at-home rules.
|
|
|
|
But, looking on the bright side, your board has a fun, creative plan to replace our annual backyard BBQ. See below.
|
|
|
|
We’ve typically had a summer barbecue neatly spaced between our
Candlelight Theatre
event and
Christmas Party.
Under the circumstances we were forced to cancel the theatre and who knows when things like backyard BBQs, picnics, etc. again will be deemed safe.
Your intrepid board came up with the idea of a virtual
YMCA campfire
program, via
ZOOM
and, as it turns out, we weren’t the first. Our colleagues in the
New England
chapter have met by video twice and have deemed it a success. We are making two assumptions:
1)
the majority of us have been to a YMCA campfire or three, and
2)
many, if not most, are now at least somewhat familiar with
ZOOM.
So, what we need from you in advance if possible are favorite campfire songs, stories, skits, jokes, especially if you are willing to perform them. You can send these along to me with your Reflections (see next story), or come up with them on the spot as the campfire spirit moves you. And that spot is:
Saturday June 27, 3:00 – 4 p.m.
We’ll send you an email with a link to the ZOOM meeting just before the event and hope to see you all there.

This will be a new column in our quarterly
Lyon Links.
Your editor will pose a topic in each issue starting with this one, and I’d encourage each of you to give it a moment’s thought (speaking for myself, my attention span isn’t what it once was), then drop me an email with your reflection(s). Space permitting, I’ll publish all that are fit to print in the following newsletter.
Your reflections can be whimsical, humorous, or dead serious. Keep them to a sentence or two. Ready? Set…
go!
Spring 2020 Reflection
:
Share one or two things you’ve learned since the first of the year.
I’ll share mine now by way of example. "Since January I’ve learned 1) that I don’t really need to go to Trader Joe’s three or four times a week, and 2) my dog needs more exercise than I do."
Okay, reflect away and drop me an
email
with your thoughts.
