Doyon Foundation Virtual Education Fair – Save the Date!

Doyon Foundation, in partnership with Tanana Chiefs Conference and University of Alaska Fairbanks Rural Student Services, is hosting a virtual education fair for middle and high school students! This fun event will help students explore careers they are interested in and what it takes to get there. Mark your calendar and plan to join us online Wednesday, April 13 for speakers, breakout sessions and prizes. Students from schools across the Doyon region are invited and encouraged to participate.

Are You an Alumni? Take Our Alumni Survey & Be Entered to Win Prizes!

All Doyon Foundation alumni are invited to take our alumni survey – and be entered to win prizes! Anyone who has received a scholarship from Doyon Foundation or Doyon, Limited, and has graduated from college or a certificate program is considered alumni and is encouraged to take the survey. All eligible alumni who complete the survey will be entered to win an iPad Mini or a $100 gift card. Surveys must be submitted by 5 p.m. AKDT on Friday, April 15, to be eligible for prizes:

Video: How to Apply for a Scholarship

We recently updated our online scholarship application system to make the process as easy, simple and efficient as possible for students. All students will need to create a new online account prior to applying for future scholarships. We created this short video to walk students through creating an account and applying for a scholarship. Take a few minutes to watch and if you have questions, get in touch:

Geoffrey Bacon

“Ever since I was little I had thought about the law, and my grandmother said, 'Ah, it'd be good to have a lawyer in the family.' And so that had been percolating in the back of my head for many, many years. I feel like I found my calling and it just seems like the right fit for me,” shares Geoffrey Bacon, the 2021 – 2022 recipient of our Marissa Flannery and Aaron Schutt Legal Scholarship, and a student at the University of California, Berkeley School of Law. Watch, read or listen to Geoffrey’s Storyteller interview:

Health Scholarship Recipients

Over the past two years, health care professionals have worked tirelessly to care for their communities. We are deeply grateful for their dedication and expertise, and we are honored to support the next generation of health care workers. A special thank you to Doyon, Limited and Tanana Chiefs Conference for their generous support of our health scholarship fund. In this short video, several of our health scholarship recipients share about their educational journeys and hopes for the future:

Brandy Romer Niclai

The Doyon Foundation journey doesn’t end with graduation! We are so proud of our alumni, the amazing places they have gone on to, the achievements they are making, and the positive differences they are having in their communities. Each month, we feature an update on one of our alumni. This month, we are pleased to highlight Brandy Romer Niclai, who is the Chief Investment Officer, Multi-Asset Strategies at Alaska Permanent Capital Management.

Spotlight on Our Students

Congratulations to Doyon Foundation student Shondiin Mayo, the newest member of the KTVF Fairbanks news team!

Roselie Carroll, one of our spring 2022 scholarship recipients, is working as a legislative intern in Rep. Chris Tuck's office in Juneau during the current session! "I’m looking forward to the next 60 days as I learn how government works from my little corner cubicle right outside of the House floor," she says.

Future Doyon Foundation student, Catherine Henry, Alatna Tribal Member, considers her future scholarship opportunities while she was attending the Yukon Tanana subregional meeting in Fairbanks last week. Catherine is the daughter of Lorraine and Vincent Henry. We look forward to helping you achieve your educational dreams a couple of years down the road, Catherine!

Bridgette Keener

Doyon Foundation student Bridgette Keener was born and raised in Fairbanks, where she now lives with her husband and two children. A first-generation college student, Bridgette is working toward a bachelor’s degree in accounting and a CPA license after graduating from the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 2024. In addition to attending school full-time, Bridgette also homeschools her two children. “I want to give them access to opportunities that I did not have,” she says.

A Doyon Foundation scholarship recipient, Bridgette says, “This scholarship has greatly reduced the financial burden of me attending school on my family. I am trying to create a better future for my children by furthering my own education and I am not sure I could have done it without the financial help of the scholarships I have received. Thank you.”

Watch next month’s e-newsletter for another student thank you, or send your thank you note to [email protected].

All of us here at Doyon Foundation look forward to welcoming these visitors, and we're happy to share this short video greeting friends in our different Native languages:

Aaron Schutt

In this Storyteller supporter profile, we speak with one of our alumni and loyal donors, Aaron Schutt, president and CEO of Doyon, Limited. “I always look back to the statements of our Elders and early board members at Doyon. Education was such an important dream of theirs for our people, and that's a motivator and a direction for those of us who have the ability to help others in that journey,” Aaron shares. Watch, listen or read Aaron’s full interview:
