McLAREN NETWORK INTEGRITY

Submitted by Connie Koutouzos:

The delivery of high-quality care coordinated across the entire health care continuum has never been more important to our patients. Synchronized care among hospitals, local physician/provider offices, ancillary services, and post-acute facilities has long been a critical component to improving quality and managing costs for patients. This is especially true, as more of the cost burden has been shifted onto patients. This dynamic has made McLaren Health Care’s mission more relevant than ever. Our commitment to be “the best value in health care as defined by quality and cost” can be achieved by reinforcing our Network Integrity … and we need your help.

Network Integrity is the practice of ensuring patients affiliated with McLaren have as many aspects of their care as possible delivered within our system. McLaren Health Care is a fully integrated health care system with a tremendous depth and breadth of service throughout our acute care hospitals, McLaren Medical Group offices, Karmanos Cancer Institute locations, and hundreds of other outpatient care sites.

There are only a few select reasons for adult patients established with McLaren — either through McLaren Medical Group providers, hospital stays, the Karmanos Cancer Network, or other ambulatory visits — to seek care outside our system. Although, on occasion, the patient’s insurance or the patient’s expressed choice may dictate where they go for care, our expectation is to maintain Network Integrity whenever possible and keep McLaren patients within our system to drive better outcomes, enhance the patient experience, and provide cost-effective care.

You — health care providers and support staff — are sources of trust and knowledge for our patients. To assist with promoting McLaren’s Network Integrity, we ask you to familiarize yourself with the materials that were emailed last week to help educate patients and ensure the McLaren network is the first choice for care.

Our guiding principle is to provide the same level of care to our patients as we would expect for our families — our outstanding services and providers reflect this principle. Your support of high-quality, coordinated care within the McLaren network is truly appreciated.

DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION

A Recipe for Togetherness

The McLaren Messenger would like to ask staff members to submit recipes as part of its Diversity and Inclusion campaign. Food is a large part of what brings people together, and by submitting a recipe, you can help people understand your culture as well as introduce people to foods they may never have tried before.

Email recipes to editor Rick Coulter's email. All recipes will be submitted for future consideration in The McLaren Messenger. We are looking forward to hearing from everyone!

This Week's Recipe: Easter Eggs

Ingredients

  • 1 (8 ounce) package of cream cheese
  • ¼ pound margarine, softened
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 pounds confectioners' sugar
  • 12 ounces peanut butter
  • 12 ounces flaked coconut
  • 4 cups semisweet chocolate chips
  • 2 tablespoons shortening

Instructions

  1. Beat cream cheese, margarine, and vanilla with an electric mixer in a mixing bowl until well combined. Add confectioners' sugar in batches and beat until ingredients are evenly distributed; dough will be very stiff.
  2. Divide the batter in half and place each half of the batter in a separate bowl. Stir peanut butter into one of the bowls and coconut flakes into the second.
  3. Using your hands, mold the dough into egg-shapes and arrange the forms on cookie sheets. Place the eggs in the freezer until frozen, 1 to 2 hour.
  4. Once the eggs have frozen, melt the chocolate and shortening in the top of a double-boiler. Dip the eggs into the chocolate until coated. Place the eggs on waxed paper-lined cookie sheets and return to the freezer to harden. After the chocolate has hardened, the eggs can be kept in the refrigerator.
