Coalition Spotlight:
Hancock County ASAP
The ASAP (Allies for Substance Abuse Prevention) Coalition is located in Hancock County in north central Iowa. Kelly Hutcheson is the director and Taylor Tendall is the Project Manager. Kelly has been in prevention for the last eighteen years, with four of them being with the coalition. Taylor just graduated from UNI with a teaching degree in Spanish. She will start her new job in Hampton in the fall.
The ASAP Coalition has two very active youth groups in the two school districts, Garner-Hayfield-Ventura and West Hancock. The West Hancock SWAT group has been very busy working with the Britt City Council on passing a marijuana dispensary ordinance, starting to work with the Kanawha City Council on passing the same ordinance, designing posters and ads about what their natural highs are instead of doing something negative, recording radio ads, attending conferences, holding a SWAT Academy for 8th grade students educating them with games and activities on alcohol, marijuana, vaping and good decision making, holding a coloring contest for elementary students on prevention, designing their prevention stickers for popcorn bags, attending the Day on the Hill, setting up and meeting with our two Iowa legislators at their school and 5 students will be attending the CADCA Conference in July.
The GHV Teen Council group has been busy recording no vaping ads for the Avery Theatre, recording drug and alcohol prevention ads for the radio, designing prevention stickers for popcorn bags, designing and putting cups in fence with 3 different designs for their school district, holding prevention coloring contests for elementary students, attending Day on the Hill, and has worked with the Garner City Council to pass different ordinances, such as the marijuana dispensary ordinance and the vaping ordinance.
The ASAP Coalition has a very active adult coalition with 8 members doing most of the tasks. The coalition is in year 10 of their DFC grant. They have been working on getting their 501c3 so they are able to continue their great work in the communities.
Thanks, Kelly, for sharing about all the great work the ASAP Coalition is doing!
