AC4C Monthly Roundtable
Use the CAP Tool
 if ordering Alcohol

At the June retreat, Dr. Gilbert and Yajaira Bolanos Flores, AC4C's Graduate Assistant working on efforts to reduce excessive drinking and other drug use through research and marketing efforts, announced the kick off of the Community Assessment Process (CAP) Tool for alcohol delivery, curbside pickup, and to-go alcohol. The tool was formerly known as the Observational Tool. These methods of obtaining alcohol have been increasing since the beginning of COVID. AC4C will gather information through December 31, 2022.

The goal of this project is to document what happens when an adult of legal drinking age buys alcohol for home delivery or to-go from a licensed establishment in Iowa. We want to know if these services and retailers are checking IDs and following other compliance protocols.

Please consider helping AC4C gather important information about how alcohol laws are working in Iowa. If you are aged 21 years or older and have purchased alcohol in the past year, we would welcome your help. Please contact Yajaira to sign up at yajaira-bolanosflores@uiowa.edu.
AC4C members, state partners and others, if you have teens in your coalitions, schools, family, or other areas of your life who might be interested in being a part of AC4C Youth, please help connect them with Alaina Elliott-Wherry, our new Youth Coordinator. They, or you, can send an email to: ac4cyouth@gmail.com

Also during the June retreat, those in person and some of those attending virtually, hit the streets of the communities and ventured to stores and shops to see what was really being sold inside and what was being advertised outside. They looked at how close the businesses were to each other and vulnerable populations like where children are attending school or daycare or enjoying playgrounds.

The groups discussed what they saw in each place and shared the photos they took. Local coalitions can share the information with their members and decide if they will talk with their businesses, work on local outlet mapping, work on zoning for prevention of licensing for certain types of stores, and/or work on media campaigns to teach parents and other caregivers about what is being marketed to and sold around children. The AC4C action teams are discussing next steps with the data collected.
