Coalition Spotlight:
Jackson County Prevention Coalition
Always Innovating
Jackson County Prevention (JCPC) has been in existence for 18 years. The coalition has been working to continue to grow and expand it’s reach and effectiveness in the community through innovation and partnerships.
In 2024, JCPC has partnered with Walmart and CADCA to host a webinar about Virtual Reality Training on how to administer Naloxone. JCPC has been working on increasing access to Naloxone, and through this partnership, a new way to receive training was shared with people across Iowa.
JCPC partnered with the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) program through the DEA to train law enforcement and first responders on how to use the overdose detection (OD) mapping system. Gathering data is a challenge, in rural counties the challenge is often compounded by smaller populations and fewer agencies. The OD mapping system provides the infrastructure for communities to gather the data in one place to be used by community organizations across the county. The HIDTA staff came to Jackson County and assisted the officers and first responders in setting up the system. This partnership also led to increased engagement by local officers with other HIDTA programs and resources.
JCPC identified a resource gap related to provision of medication assisted treatment (MAT) for opioids and alcohol. JCPC has brought together community partners and the state Mobile MAT clinic to partner to provide this life saving service to residents.
By building on existing resources and partnering with agencies and organizations that serve Jackson County and beyond, Jackson County has been able to work in new spaces and improve overall health and well being.
Thanks to Julie Furne for telling us about what their coalition is up to and for giving us all interesting ideas to look into implementing in our communities.

Welcome to our New AC4C Board Members:
Kassy Rice and Julie Doeppke
|
Hi, I am Kassy Rice. I am the Director of the Wellness Coalition of Rural Linn County. We provide mental health awareness and substance use prevention services and training within the communities of Mount Vernon, Lisbon, Springville, Central City, Alburnett, and Center Point.
Our goal as a coalition has always been to partner with other agencies to further impact prevention efforts, which is why AC4C is such a perfect fit. This group is made up of leaders in action who are brainstorming ways to collaborate and make lasting and impactful change. AC4C provides a wonderful platform to share resources and ideas that can be utilized by communities across the state.
In my spare time, you will find me outside at our farm playing with my family, working in flower beds, and riding horses.

Hello, my name is Julie Doeppke, member of 5C’s (Clayton County Community Collaboration Council). At this time, we are an all-volunteer coalition. We work with the community and schools to educate on drugs and alcohol. We have a Hidden in Plain Sight display and a driving simulator that we use with it. I joined this organization because I lost a brother in 2009 to a drunk driver in a crash. I believe if we educate and I share my story of losing a loved one, we can change others' stories. I always say, “Share my story, don’t make your own.”
I respect AC4C’s commitment to community prevention. I believe this will be very helpful to our 5Cs Coalition and hope in return I can share information with AC4C members to support them in their work. I'm excited to be part of an amazing team.
I am an insurance agent for 25 years. I have been blessed to meet so many amazing people along the way. In our agency, we say we don’t have clients we have friends. In my spare time, I love spending time with my family, hunting, and being out in nature.

Upcoming Events:
Summer Work Retreat -
June 19 and 20, 2024
The 19th (Day 1) will be virtual only, with state partner sharing, and the 20th (Day 2) will be the day to bring our youth to participate in the Leadership Reaction Course with MCTC! We will also have our normal coalition sharing and workgroup/action team time that day. Day 2 will be hybrid with a virtual option. When registering for the two-day retreat, if you are coming for the second day at Camp Dodge, select "in-person".
The agenda will be coming out soon. There is limited free lodging at Camp Dodge for adults on June 19th. Unfortunately, youth cannot stay on campus. If you need lodging, go ahead and select Yes for "the night prior to the class". MCTC knows that means the night of the 19th only. Any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

Highlights from the AC4C Legislative Learning Event
In case you missed the AC4C Legislative Learning Event on March 26, you can watch it from our AC4C YouTube Channel HERE (Just click on the first video titled, Legislative Learning Event, March 26, 2024)
The learning event focused on the alcohol issue in Iowa. Twenty-four total people attended the event, including several legislators and a few clerks, as well as AC4C members. The power points from both Dr. Paul Gilbert from the University of Iowa College of Public Health and from the Iowa State University Public Science Collaborative (PSC) with Dr. Cass Dorius and Matt Voss are available HERE.
Thanks so much to both Dr. Gilbert and the ISU PSC team for giving your time and providing amazing education to all of us and the lawmakers. Thanks also to our individual members and to the coalitions who helped fund the breakfast.
This was AC4C's first legislative learning event focused on alcohol. With Iowa's high rates of excessive drinking and increasing alcohol-involved deaths, including cancers caused by alcohol, it is time for whole population-level evidence-based strategies that help all Iowans.
