Guidepost Solutions Plays Pivotal Security Role For Chicago’s Iconic Post Office Renovation
The Project:
One of Chicago’s most recognizable buildings is under construction. The iconic Old Chicago Main Post Office along Congress Parkway is undergoing a $600 million transformation into modern offices and retail space. In 1932, the original architects built the world's largest post office, but it’s been vacant since the mid-1990s when a new post office opened nearby. New York-based, 601w real estate company’s plan, designed by San Francisco-based architecture firm Gensler, is redeveloping the 2.5 million square-foot building into modern office space with high-end amenities. A few of the modifications include a 40,000 square-foot food hall, a 24,000 square-foot fitness center, a 400-seat auditorium conference center and a 4-acre rooftop park for tenants. 

The grand opening is slated for Spring 2019 and through its unique combination of historical elements and progressive interior design, when completed, the Old Chicago Main Post Office will provide collaborative work environments and state-of-the art technology housed within an infrastructure that cannot be replicated
Guidepost's Solution:
Securing a building of this size is no easy task. The building was designed as a mail processing facility and is now being converted to a Class A – multi-tenant office space. The architect firm JLL tapped Guidepost Solutions to develop a security master plan for securing the building while providing a five-star tenant and guest experience. Guidepost Solutions established a layout plan for the main lobby incorporating access control, optical-barrier turnstiles, a security desk (including its associated equipment), and visitor kiosks. A unified security command center was designed to monitor the building and grounds including an integrated access control and video management platform, emergency communication systems, situational awareness tools, and the ability to command the building in the mobile environment. In addition, Guidepost Solutions designed security countermeasures to deter and detect challenges often faced in a multi-tenant environment. Our experts developed a visitor management process; designed video monitoring systems covering the entire complex; established a keying plan for tenant and mechanical door hardware; and designed emergency telephones, intercom, and garage duress buttons.

Angela Osborne
Regional Director, Security and Technology
Angela J. Osborne is the regional director for the Security and Technology Consulting group in the Washington, D.C. office of Guidepost Solutions. She specializes in conducting threat assessments; performing security risk assessments; and assisting clients in crisis management training, simulations, and program development. She has worked with clients in diverse sectors, including government, healthcare, energy, legal, manufacturing, and residential properties.

Angela is currently the co-chair of the ASIS International Young Professionals Council, serves on the ASIS International Strategic Planning Committee and the Career Pathways Task Force, and is lead coordinator for the Annual Global Security Exchange Career Center. She is an accomplished speaker and published writer and has presented at ASIS annual and international conferences in Dallas (2017), The Hague (2013), and Dubai (2013).

When not working, Angela, and her husband Wesley, can be found visiting the U.S. presidential homes open to the public and to date have visited 22 of their homes. She speaks French and Arabic and enjoys reading, studying history, traveling, and learning about new cultures.
