CLARY'S COOL JOB KEEPS HER DOWN ON THE FARM
Bridgette Clary’s job is cool because it allowed her to follow her heart into farming, something she was raised on and dearly loves.   She started her new job on March 6 and is the Virginia Territory Sales Representative for Zeigler's Distributor, Lebanon, Pennsylvania. 

“I am responsible for overseeing existing accounts and generating new sales for my territory. Zeigler's is a family-owned pet food and supply distributor that distributes several high-quality brands,” she said.
State Board Committee Certifies Finalists for College Presidency
The State Board for Community Colleges has certified three finalists for the position of president at Southside Virginia Community College. The finalists were among 81 applicants from across the nation.
The three finalists, pictured in alphabetical order, are Dr. Thomas G. Coley of Granger, IA; Dr. Jacqueline M. Gill of Lee’s Summit, MO; and Dr. Quentin R. Johnson of Mooresville, NC.

SVCC Governor’s School Rocket Launch Successful

"We lost our rocket two years ago, blew one up last year and finally had a very successful launch and recovery during March,” according to Brent Richey, Associate Professor of Math and known as the ‘Rocket Man’ around SVCC.  

He and a group of students from the Governor’s School of Southside Virginia whom he teaches and who assembled the rocket, traveled to South Carolina recently. The device was launched at Modern Turf Farm in Rembert, SC.

“This year’s rocket reached a maximum altitude of 6500 feet with a max velocity
of about 700 mph. The rocket landed

safely about a mile away and we found it with GPS (which happened to be a cheap phone in the nose cone and using a ‘find my device’ to locate it),” said Richey.

SVCC Among the Best RN Programs in Virginia
RegisteredNursing.org has just released its list of 2019 Best RN Programs in Virginia, and SVCC's programs have been ranked among the best.  
The Christanna Campus program was ranked #3, while the South Boston and Daniel Campus programs were ranked #8 and #9, out of 62 RN programs assessed.
Local Students Encourage Other Females to Study Technology
According to statistics, women hold less than 20% of technology jobs. SVCC is working to change that statistic ONE student at a time. Sophie Crowder, at Kenston Forest and Ella Patton, at Park View High School, partnered with the community college to bring a day of hands-on activities geared at encouraging girls to consider Information Technology pathways.  Read More
DeJarnette is 1st Graduate
Mitch DeJarnette is proud to be the first graduate of the associate degree program offered through a partnership with The Virginia, Maryland, Delaware Association of Electric Cooperatives (VMDAED) and Southside Virginia Community College (SVCC). This program was developed so apprentice linemen could gain a degree in Industrial Technology while working.   Read More
