Executive Director Report

Not many people would have predicted what has occurred over the last 15 months due to the global pandemic. Our hope is that you have remained safe and healthy during this time period. As there seems to be “light at the end of the tunnel”, optimism is beginning to appear again in the electrical industry in our province.

One of the events which the participants enjoyed was the Tin Cup. With the easing of restrictions, we are happy to host the Tin Cup again this year. It will be on August 12 at the Deer Valley Golf Club. Registration has begun. Be sure to enter soon as we expect to sell out in the next few weeks. There are also plenty of opportunities to sponsor this event ranging from hole signs, tents, beverage and food holes. Please contact us if you are interested in sponsoring the Tin Cup 2021. We hope to see you on August 12 at Deer Valley.

It is not all fun and games on the golf course this summer. We continue to advocate for the electrical industry in our province. Some of the important initiatives we are following over the next few months include:

Licencing and Inspections transition to TSASK.
CEC 2021 Code Renewal training and implementation.
Master electrician requirement concept.
Prompt payment legislation.
Discounted training opportunities for members.

Pandemic's Impact on Employee's Financial Wellbeing

It is no surprise that the prolonged coronavirus pandemic is having an effect on working Canadians’ financial well-being. The stress is taking a toll on their savings and their productivity in the workplace, according to a new survey by LifeWorks Inc.

Although Canadian workers’ financial well-being score for April improved slightly from February’s, the survey found it was still lower than the pre-pandemic data collected in 2019. Earlier this year, 21 percent of the respondents reported increased financial concern; however, the number has since decreased to 18 per cent.

Every few years it is imperative that an association take a step back and look at the direction they are heading and, if necessary, make corrections on the priorities that drive the association. Now is that time for CECA.

We recently engaged two universities to complete strategic planning reports for CECA. These reports are helping us update our strategic plan to ensure we are focused on the things that are important to our members.

Areas that members want CECA to continue to improve are education, advocacy, more national recognition, more sharing of best practices and supporting green energy.

Saskatchewan Youth Apprenticeship Program Wraps Up Unprecedented Year

Staff at the Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission (SATCC) continued to promote the Saskatchewan Youth Apprenticeship (SYA) program, apprenticeship, and careers in the skilled trades throughout 2020-21. However, that promotion looked a little different than in previous years due to COVID-19.

While SYA program staff typically deliver face-to-face presentations in classrooms across the province, this past year they used software like Zoom and Microsoft Teams to deliver presentations remotely. They also recorded presentations and uploaded them to the SATCC’s website and YouTube channel so educators can access the material when it’s convenient for them. They also participated in virtual career events.

SCSA Update

REGINA - The Saskatchewan Construction Safety Association (SCSA) is announcing the update of its Fall Protection & Prevention Training Course effective on June 16, 2021. Falling from heights accounts for hundreds of injuries in the construction industry, many of which are preventable. This new Fall Protection & Prevention Training course is expected to help reduce injuries in the construction industry. Learn more.
