What’s New? PCPR & YMCA Updates
May 2021
Department Updates
Bye Letoya! Hi Letoya!
Our Athletics Coordinator, Letoya, has moved over to the YMCA, but for now will still be in the offices housed at Stearns Gym. She will continue managing the programs y'all know and love AND she will be adding more programs, such as youth sports camps this summer. To contact Letoya directly, please email ltwitty@spartanburgymca.org.

Hi Atticus!
Also joining the team is Atticus Fehl, the district executive director of the YMCA of Greater Spartanburg. He will be helping smooth the transition to the YMCA partnership. Stop by and say hi! To contact Atticus directly, email afehl@spartanburgymca.org.

PARTF grant
After many meetings with the public, we are overwhelmed with the support for the PARTF project. This grant, if awarded, will help build 5 miles of mountain biking trail on Little White Oak Mountain and fund various improvements to the Recreation Complex. We will find out at the end of the summer if we are chosen to receive the award. For more information on the application, check out our website.

Community Health Survey
Please fill out this survey to help our county gather information about the health of the people who live here. This helps identify gaps in care and patterns in illness and allows the health department to see the "big picture" of the health of Polk County. Please take the survey here:

New Mulch
New mulch has been installed at both Stearns Park playground and the Recreation Complex Playground. Enjoy!

We're Looking for Lifeguards!
We could still use a few good guards to round out the team for this summer. If you are interested, head to https://spartanburgy.gethired.com/ and apply for the position labeled "Open". Email Letoya as well so she can keep an eye out for your application!
Sports Updates
Summer High School and Adult League Basketball
There are a few more days to sign up your team! The deadline is May 21. Register your team here!

Sports Camps
When you are ready to register, head to the YMCA of Greater Spartanburg website to sign up!

Soccer & Baseball
Both seasons are wrapping up, and it was so great to see everyone out and playing again! Thanks everyone for signing up and showing your support for the programs; registration for Fall soccer and NEW Fall Baseball/Softball will be opening soon, so keep an eye out!
Summer Program Updates
Summer Day Camp
Camp will be held this year at Tryon Elementary, and the hours will be 9-4:30 with free before and after care! To register, visit the YMCA website. You will need to create a profile for your family, add your children, and then sign them up for each week that you would like for them to attend.

LET'S GO SWIMMING!!!
Reserve your spot for a POOL PARTY or SWIM LESSON NOW! VISIT the YMCA website for more information or to register.

Homeschool Corner
We will continue to meet in Stearns Park during May! Email Laura @ lbaird@polknc.org to reserve a spot for our in-person meetups. We will be meeting at 1 pm on Tuesdays for ages 6 and up and at 10 am on Wednesdays for ages 6 and under! Join us for scavenger hunts, physical challenges, and fun games!
Trails Updates
TRAIL CLOSED
Our trail at the Recreation Complex is still temporarily closed as we finalize the route, add signage and trail markers, and create a hiker bypass! Please respect the closure to minimize impact to the trail at this time.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
If you would like to help us with trail work, please contact trails@polknc.org and Molly will let you know when workdays are scheduled. If you feel safer working on your own, feel free to walk a trail, picking up trash and moving small branches from the trails. Please don't cut any branches; if a trail needs more attention, email trails@polknc.org and we will take care of it or bring it to that trail manager's attention.

TRAILS COMMITTEE MEETING
Every month, community stakeholders meet to share updates about area trails. The meetings are open to the public and are online. Send Molly your questions and updates ahead of time if you can't make it!

Trail Committee meeting

Time: May 24, 2021 09:00 AM Eastern Time

MIND YOUR MANNERS
Most trails, if they are open, may not have public facilities that are open, so check ahead of time. If you are sick, PLEASE stay home. If a trail is crowded, please travel to a different spot so you can practice social distancing. Other trail courtesies also still apply: keep dogs on-leash, take your trash with you, etc. Thanks for doing your part!
